💡We Make Math Make Sense!💡 This class will present learners with the opportunity to participate in Number Talks, Number Strings and Mental Math Routines on a weekly basis to strengthen their number sense, fact fluency, and mental math strategies in addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and decimals. These number routines are structures for talking about numbers, number concepts, and number sense. The routines engage learners in discussion to make meaning out of problem solving. The routines that will be used in class help learners: • Improve number sense and fluency • Reason with mathematics • Improve performance and achievement in math • Encourage having a growth mindset • Develop fluency over time • Strengthen mental math skills • Honor and leverage errors in their thinking • Develop confidence in math • Be flexible with numbers Some of the routines we’ll use in this class are: • Number Talks: Students use mental math and flexible strategies to solve a given problem. • Number Strings: A set of related math problems, crafted to support students to construct big ideas about mathematics and build their own strategies. • Math Yapper: Students provide clues for the group to guess the mystery numbers, concepts or vocabulary. • Picture It: Students estimate quantities in pictures and share their estimation strategies. • Mystery Number: Students use clues about a number to determine if they have the mystery number. • Number Bio: Students complete prompts about a given number. • About or Between: Students estimate sums, differences, products, and quotients. • Another Way to Say It: Students rethink or rewrite expressions to find results more efficiently. • Make It Friendly: Students add more than one number by finding friendly numbers. • Which One Doesn’t Belong: Students choose one number, image, or concept from a group and justify why it doesn't belong with the others. • The Truth: Students consider if equations are true or false. Our schedule for each class will be as follows: ~ 3 minutes: Welcome and Build Community ~ 3 minutes: Introduction to the Routine/Number Talk/Problem for the Day (Usually on a Powerpoint Slide for all to see.) ~ 3 minutes: Students Work Independently to Generate Responses to the Given Problem ~10-15 minutes: Share and Discuss Strategies (This is where the deep learning happens!) Our first 8 sessions will cover the following: January 5: Make It Friendly (Give and Take) January 12: Number String (Give and Take) January 19: Over/Under January 26: Number String (Over/Under) February 2: Number Bio February 9: Number String February 16: The Truth February 23: Big or Small From here, we will continue with Number Talks and Routines covering all 4 operations including fractions and decimals. I will formatively assess learners as we work together each week so I can personalize instruction and activities to meet their individual needs during class. Learners can join this class any week. New Routines and Number Talks are presented at each session. Continued participation in this class is highly encouraged as it takes time and practice with these Routines to build fluency and number sense. Your learner will need a piece of paper and/or a small dry erase board with a marker for each class.
