In this ongoing class, we will focus on real-world math in the context of running a zoo. We will focus on a different aspect of running the zoo each week.  Each week will be a stand-alone topic, classes will not build on one another, so feel free to come to any of the classes you like without worrying about what was taught before!  Let's practice math together!  Each class will pose a real-life problem in the day-to-day creation or running of a zoo.  We will have time to work on the problem and share the strategies used with the rest of the class. We will need to use our math skills to keep the zoo running smoothly.   If there is the time at the end of class we will play a math facts review game.  

Week of 3/15- Choose animals for a zoo within a budget. (multiplication, addition)
Week of 3/22-Create zoo enclosures each enclosure must be the right size for each animal (area and perimeter work)
Week of 3/29 - Order food for the animals in a zoo.  Choose the right food for each animal and stay within budget.  (We will practice using fractions!) 
Week of 4/5 - Choose Admission Price.  Use the projected attendance and budgetary needs to choose the price of admission.  
Week of 4/12- Souvenir Shop.  Use the sales in the souvenir shop, subtract labor and product costs to calculate profit. (Addition, subtraction)
Week of 4/19 - Use graphs to see what exhibits are the most popular at each time of day.  (Analyze data)
Week of 4/26- Enrichments-  Stay within budget to choose enrichment items for the animals at the zoo. (Multiplication, addition)

Hello!   My name is Mrs. W and I’m so excited to help your student grow and learn! In my classroom, we have fun and focus on creating awesome projects to showcase our learning.

I am a certified teacher with a Master's in Curriculum and Instruction. I have taught in the classroom or online for the past 13 years. It is so fun to be able to work on Outschool to create fun, interactive classes! I believe that the most important parts of learning are interest and involvement.  That is why I love project-based learning and learning through games!  I love giving learners a chance to connect and express themselves!  I strive to have a classroom where learners feel safe, have fun, and learn a lot.

POLICIES
Class expectations/ muting:
Participation from learners enrolled is encouraged in my classes. I prefer to leave learners unmuted, but I also understand that there are instances where learners need to be muted due to background noise that cannot be avoided. 

At the beginning of each class I will let all my new students know that I will only mute them if there is background noise that is distracting to myself as the the teacher, or the other students. They will also be made aware of my expectations. I ask that the students raise their hand in the classroom if another student is talking. Otherwise, as long as I am not speaking, my learners are free to ask questions. 

--Communication--
I do not check my email while teaching classes, which means I often cannot respond to last-minute requests.  I will respond to messages within 24 hours during weekdays, or Monday mornings following the weekend.  

--Transfers and Refunds--
Generally, I am more than happy to accommodate transfers within 24 hours of class time.  If there are extenuating circumstances, do let me know as I understand that sometimes life throws you a curve ball.  Enrolled students who do not make it to class are invited to request a video link to view the missed class.

--Video--
As per Outschool policy, I require all learners to do a live check-in with video on at least once during each class.  I strongly encourage videos to remain on in class, but learners are free to turn their videos off after their check-in.
