Are you a fan of Dog Man? Do you love to doodle and want to learn how to turn those doodles into your own graphic novel stories? If so, then this is the class for you! In this course we will use the book Dog Man by Dav Pilkey to learn the different elements of a story. Each week we will read one chapter of Dog Man and use that chapter to learn about one part of writing process. We will examine how these story elements are used in Dog Man and how to apply these elements to our own story planning. Throughout the class we will complete the brainstorming and planning process for our own graphic novels. In the first lesson of the course, we will examine how the characters and setting are important to a graphic novel. We will learn about the different types of characters and begin to think about the setting and characters for our own stories. In the second lesson of class, we will examine different genres of books and the plot structure of stories. We will practice diagraming the plot of Dog Man and start to brainstorm the different plot elements of our own stories. In the third lesson, we will examine how dialogue, writing, and visual elements play a roll in graphic novels. We will practice writing our own dialogue to go with illustrations from Dog Man and start thinking about the things our own characters might say in our stories. In the final lesson of class, we will examine story endings. We will look at the different types of endings and practice writing different style endings for our graphic novels. After completing the class learners will have completed the planning process and will have the tools ready to start working on their own graphic novel. Please note, we will not be completing the entire writing process during this class. We will be brainstorming in the class so students can work on their own stories and graphic novels at their own pace after the class is finished. This class utilizes Nearpod so learners can interact with the lesson and teacher. Each week there will be a video to watch, interactive activities to reenforce learning, and a graphic organizer to assist with planning that can be filled out digitally or printed as a hard copy.
