In "Book & Cook Club: Strega Nona Story, Plus Pasta Party!", students will participate in an interactive read aloud of "Strega Nona" by Tomie dePaola, plus engaging hands-on activities. The class will culminate in a pasta party, complete with homemade tomato sauce! This is a multidisciplinary course emphasizing English language and culinary skills. Please note that active adult participation will be required for Day 3. Students will learn through a combination of teacher read alouds, peer discussions and teacher-led activities. Through the use of live video meetings (including hands-on activities), printable resources and lively conversations, students will delve into the magical world of Strega Nona. Class time will be structured in the following way: Day 1: Students should come to class with their listening ears on. Class expectations and schedules will be reviewed. We will take a "book walk", previewing the Strega Nona story. As a group, we will review the setting for the story, Calabria, Italy, as well as some challenging/important vocabulary, helping to prepare us for the read-aloud ahead. Students will have the opportunity to share their preferences for pasta & sauce aloud. Teacher will read the book aloud to the class. As a group, we will discuss comprehension questions related to the story. Optional homework after Day 1 class concludes: complete the cut & paste story sequencing activity; complete the "Drawing & Writing: Feelings" activity (pages 2 - 4 in the attached class file) Day 2: Students should come to class with their printed class file, or blank pieces of paper, plus drawing/writing tools, and modeling dough. During our Day 2 class, we'll share any optional Day 1 homework that was completed. Next, we will create our own "Strega Nona Chants" (page 5 in the attached class file); additionally, we'll discuss the phrase from Strega Nona, “the punishment must fit the crime” and share our opinions about that idea with a 2-column comparison chart. As a group, we'll also match causes & effects from the story. Finally, we will use modeling dough to sculpt either the figure of Strega Nona or Big Anthony (page 6 in the attached class file, if needed). While completing these activities, teacher will lead students through discussions of the Strega Nona book. Student questions are always welcomed and encouraged. Required homework after Day 2 concludes: with adult, prep all pasta and sauce ingredients before class session (page 10 in the attached class file); have adult present for cooking Optional homework after Day 2 class concludes: complete the "Letter Writing" activity; complete the pasta coloring page (pages 7 - 9 in the attached class file) Day 3: Prior to attending Day 3, students should work with an adult to prepare all needed ingredients, in the correct measurements, for our pasta with sauce cooking and eating party (page 10 in the attached class file)! During this class, we'll also share any optional Day 2 homework that was completed. Throughout the course of this 3-day class, students will enjoy a picture book, learning how to organize and speak about their thoughts, and safely preparing delicious pasta plus homemade sauce to enjoy.
