Join us as we deep dive into a new and exciting book from the Who Was series each week! From scientists and inventors, to historical figures and major historical events, we’ll enjoy them all! Your students will love with this book club! Students will need to read the books in the week prior to class time. Each book has ten short chapters. During book club, full participation in class discussion is expected. There is grace for a shy student, of course, but students will be encouraged to dive into the discussion as they acclimate to the group. Each student will have a turn to share their thoughts and ideas. I will have questions and discussion prompts ready each week, should conversation lag. Each week will include Map Time, when we “travel “ to the map to locate the settings mentioned in our book, as well as Time Capsule Time, when I share a few historical figures or events that occur at the same time as our book. After our discussion time, we will end with a game if time permits! My book clubs are typically highly engaging, highly interactive, very lively! This is an ongoing class, and as each book is a stand alone topic, students may drop in to discuss their favorites at will, although remaining in club long term is recommended. We build quite a bond as a group over time, and it’s quite a special experience. This class is designed to be fully interactive and students are expected to be fully engaged. If interacting with teacher and peers is uncomfortable for your student, this class is not a good fit for them. No prior knowledge is necessary. To kick off this book club, I will list the books for the first few weeks. Going forward, I will add to the list based on the Who interests of the students. My Tuesday class: Who Was Abraham Lincoln? What Was The Battle of Gettysburg? Who Was Clara Barton? Who Was Robert E. Lee? Who Was Ulysses S. Grant? What Was The Underground Railroad? Who Was Harriet Tubman? Who Was Frederick Douglas? Who Was Sojourner Truth? Who Was Ida B. Wells? Who Was Harriet Beecher Stowe? What Was The Reconstruction? Who Was George Washington Carver? TBD - This class decides together on future books, and everyone gets a vote! Also… we really enjoy clumping books together in themes! Books are available in libraries everywhere, as Kindle Books, and some are even on Audible. Parents can co-read or read aloud for early or struggling readers. Please come to book club ready to discuss!

Orientación para padres
It is always my recommendation that parents pre screen the books beforehand. Although these are biographies for children, there may be events that your particular student isn’t ready for yet. In book club, I will guide conversations of any sensitive topics with empathy, consideration, truth, and grace.
I have a PhD in pedagogy and history, with a Master’s in Cultural Studies. One of my core values is to teach the true and accurate version of history I was not taught as a child. Racism or racial stereotypes is never acceptable to me, and neither is a white-washed version of American History.

Fuentes
To provide a well-rounded perspective for discussions, I will be referencing The American Revolution: A Visual History by The Smithsonian, as well as Flight: The Complete History of Aviation, also by the Smithsonian. We will also take a look at the Declaration of Independence, a book of Washington’s letters, as well as excerpts of articles from issues of the Journal of American History published by Oxford University Press.
As other topics arise, I will reference other sources and actual historical documents, as suit our topics.
