Join us as we deep dive into a new and exciting book from the Who Was series each week! From scientists and inventors, to historical figures and major historical events, we’ll enjoy them all! Your students will love with this book club! Students will need to read the books in the week prior to class time. Each book has ten short chapters. During book club, full participation in class discussion is expected. There is grace for a shy student, of course, but students will be encouraged to...
- Students will gain skills in the following areas: - public speaking - taking turns speaking - practicing active listening - sharing thoughts and insights - building vocabulary - knowledge of historical people and events - exploring the characters, geographic locations, and time in history
I have a PhD in pedagogy and history, with a Master’s in Cultural Studies. One of my core values is to teach the true and accurate version of history I was not taught as a child. Racism or racial stereotypes is never acceptable to me, and neither is a white-washed version of American History.

Books are available in libraries everywhere, as Kindle Books, and some are even on Audible. Parents can co-read or read aloud for early or struggling readers. Please come to book club ready to discuss!
It is always my recommendation that parents pre screen the books beforehand. Although these are biographies for children, there may be events that your particular student isn’t ready for yet. In book club, I will guide conversations of any sensitive topics with empathy, consideration, truth, and grace. I have a PhD in pedagogy and history, with a Master’s in Cultural Studies. To provide a well-rounded perspective for discussions, I will be referencing The American Revolution: A Visual History by The Smithsonian, as well as Flight: The Complete History of Aviation, also by the Smithsonian. We will also take a look at the Declaration of Independence, a book of Washington’s letters, as well as excerpts of articles from issues of the Journal of American History published by Oxford University Press. As other topics arise, I will reference other sources and actual historical documents, as suit our topics.
