The book, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, by Mildred D. Taylor, is a Newbery Medal award winner. This novel, based in the South of the United States, is a classic story about a family dealing with racial injustice. It is a heartwarming story of a close-knit family, that has land that ties them together. 

As a group, we will study and discuss the racial and social injustice in the deep South during the difficult times of the Great Depression. 

I am a very hands-on teacher. Everyone has a chance to participate in the group discussion and activities. Each student will receive a copy of discussion questions and activities to complete as they read. Each chapter is approximately 30 pages long.

Class one: February 11 will be an introduction to the book, as well as the history around this time in the United States. Students will then read chapters 1-4 on their own and use the discussion questions as a guide.

Class two: February 18 will be a discussion of chapters 1-4, along with in-class activities. Students will then read chapters 5-8 as homework

Class three: February 25 will be a discussion of chapters 5-8, along with in-class activities. Students will read chapters 9-12 as homework.

Class four: March 4 will be a discussion of chapters 9-12, as well as in-class activities.
