Come tour the world through great books! Join me and other classmates from all over the planet as we read exciting stories about great adventures and the people who experienced them. In this series, we’ll read one book together over the course of 4 weeks, giving you time to read and dive into the story. Included in our book club will be: -Weekly live book discussion -An engaging presentation all about the author -Intriguing background information highlighting locations, characters, and historical context -Appropriate video tie-ins -In-class dramatic readings -Vocabulary review -Weekly creative projects such as colorful mapping, a native Californian art project, and other fun activities 𝘐𝘴𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘭𝘶𝘦 𝘋𝘰𝘭𝘱𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘴 is a fast-paced book that is not only full of adventure, it's interesting and even educational—all the best things about reading rolled into one. We'll follow 12-year-old Karana, who is stranded alone for years on an island off the California coast. She braves the forces of nature, tames wild animals, and learns to survive off the land. Please see the Parental Guidance section for concerns about historical accuracy. You can choose to read or listen to an audio version of the book. We’ll split each book into 3 sections and read one section per week. For 𝘐𝘴𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘭𝘶𝘦 𝘋𝘰𝘭𝘱𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘴, our schedule will look like this: Session/Week One: In-class intro (you do not have to read anything before our first session) Session/Week Two: Come to class having read Chapters 1-10 Session/Week Three: Come to class having read Chapters 11- 20 Session/Week Four: Come to class having read Chapters 21- 29 Love reading? Orientación para padres
Our heroine uses tools to spear fish and protect herself. The wild animals can be unpredictable and the story has plenty of suspense.
I am using National Parks Services resources extensively. You can see them here: https://www.nps.gov/subjects/islandofthebluedolphins/teacher-resources.htm
As a class, we look at current anthropological information and also talk about the inaccuracies of historical fiction in general, and what is inaccurate about this book in particular. I make it evident that the book is based upon a story, not the story itself. The author, Scott O’Dell, did the same. He wrote often about his love for California natives and crafted his books to tell their stories with respect.

I am a Native Californian who lived for several months on a native tribal reservation, learning from and living within the community. While not a native Nicoleño (the tribe of Karana, the heroine of 𝘐𝘴𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘭𝘶𝘦 𝘋𝘰𝘭𝘱𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘴), I have done extensive research into the novel and have taught this particular book from a viewpoint of respect and with an awareness of inappropriate prejudice, allowing students to question and discuss how native populations are viewed. Other than that, I am a book lover, home educator (8 students over 25 years ), author, literature grad student, and story-hungry Outschool teacher. One of my greatest joys is seeing your learners spark an interest in great literature through our discussions together!
