Come tour the world through great books! Join me and other classmates from all over the planet as we read exciting stories about great adventures and the people who experienced them.

In this series, we’ll read one book together over the course of 4 weeks, giving you time to read and dive into the story. Included in our book club will be:

-Weekly live book discussion
-An engaging presentation all about the author
-Intriguing background information highlighting locations, characters, and historical context
-Appropriate video tie-ins
-Vocabulary review
-Weekly creative projects such as drawing, letter writing, and other fun projects

Newbery Medal winner 𝘏𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘰, 𝘜𝘯𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘦 is a fast-paced book that is not only full of adventure, it’s funny, interesting, tender, and even educational—all the best things about reading rolled into one.

Virgil Salinas is shy and misunderstood. Valencia Somerset is clever and stubborn. Kaori Tanaka tells fortunes and can read the stars. Chet Bullens is the biggest bully in the neighborhood. They aren't friends. They're practically strangers. But when Chet pulls an unthinkable prank on Virgil and his pet guinea pig, Gulliver, these four middle-schoolers are thrown together in surprising ways.

You can choose to read or listen to an audio version of the book. We’ll split each book into 3 sections and read one section per week. For 𝘏𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘰, 𝘜𝘯𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘦, our schedule will look like this:

Session/Week One: In-class intro (you do not have to read anything before our first session)
Session/Week Two: Come to class having read Chapters 1-14
Session/Week Three: Come to class having read Chapters 15- 29
Session/Week Four: Come to class having read Chapters 30- 42

What happens when a learner is given the time and space to soak in a story and allow it to change their life? “Aha!” moments are my goal, and it’s why I adore leading worthwhile discussions about classic books. What good is it if we require a teen to read a book but our dry and uninteresting rendering makes them never want to pick up another book of note ever again?

Book classes for kids who want an adventure, middle and high school literature studies, introductory writing, and engaging story times for the youngest of readers and story lovers are my passion here on Outschool. We can give our kids so much more than our own experiences when we open a book and the world to them!

I have a BA in Music/Opera Studies and am currently studying for an MSt Literature and Arts at Oxford University. I homeschooled our 8 children for 25 years in which we studied, read, and learned through nearly 500 great books together. That experience and literary knowledge have spilled out into the literature studies I lead with adult learners and kids alike.
