Welcome to our Kit Book Club!

Kit is a girl growing up in Cincinnati in 1934. Many people are losing their jobs, their money, and even their homes. When Kit's dad loses his job, her world gets turned upside down. Kit learns what "waste not, want not" really means, gets into very big trouble, and meets people whose lives are far worse than her own. Kit's strong spirit - and her nose for news - help her hold on to hope even when the future looks bleak from every angle.

We'll start each class learning a fact about the Great Depression. Students will have an opportunity to compare and contrast their lives to the life of this historic character. We will then move on to reading through the next Kit book. The teacher will pause during the reading to ask comprehension questions and discuss new vocabulary words. Students are encouraged to bring their own copies of the books to class so they can take turns reading (optional)!

Week 1: Meet Kit & Notable News (students will learn about choosing catchy headlines)
Week 2: Kit Learns a Lesson & Thanksgiving Traditions (students will share how they celebrate Thanksgiving and compare/contrast this to Kit’s family in the book)
Week 3: Kit's Surprise & Money Makers (students will share ways to make money)
Week 4: Happy Birthday, Kit! & Perfect Pets (students will discuss favorite pets & why they like these pets)
Week 5: Kit Saves the Day & Hometown Heroes (students will share examples of the people in their community who are heroes - community helpers)
Week 6: Changes for Kit (students will retell their favorite scenes from the book series)
Week 7: Really Truly, Ruthie

Perfil
Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
Hello! I graduated from Southeastern Louisiana University in 2015 with a degree in Early Childhood Education (PreK-3). I've spent 5 years teaching in a private school setting and 2 years teaching homeschoolers and online students. It's been such an honor to be part of training students to have strong character and a life-long love of learning. I am excited to share these passions with my students on Outschool! In my free time, I enjoy cross-stitch projects, reading, playing guitar and piano, singing, and long walks with friends and family. See you in class!
