SALUT! Welcome to the study of FRENCH I.
This session/ these sessions we will be tailored to your needs and/or learning goals.

CLASS CONTENT:
You can expect to build your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in French, via the Communicative Method, which involves vocabulary acquisition, the study of grammar, the practice of paragraph and short composition writing, and listening to/ watching short video presentations.

French I will begin with the study of the basics—including the alphabet, accents, and an introduction to French culture.

VOCABULARY & GRAMMAR Topics include (but are not limited to):
◊ Introduction to French: Basic greetings, introductions, and expressions.
◊ Pronunciation: Learning how to pronounce French sounds and words correctly.
◊ Definite and Indefinite Articles: Understanding the differences between "le," "la," "les"
(definite articles), and "un," "une", "des" (indefinite articles).
◊ Subject Pronouns: Learning the subject pronouns in French such as "je," "tu," "il/elle,"
     "nous," "vous," "ils/elles."
◊ Present Tense of Regular Verbs: Conjugation of regular -er, -ir, and -re verbs in the present tense.
◊ Negation: Forming negative sentences using "ne...pas" to express "not".
◊ Question Words (Interrogatives): Asking questions using question words like "qui," "quoi," "où," "quand," "comment," "pourquoi."
◊ Possessive Adjectives: Understanding how to express possession using words like "mon," "ma," "mes," "ton," "ta," "tes," etc.
◊ Demonstrative Adjectives: Learning words like "ce," "cet," "cette," "ces" to demonstrate proximity or distance.
◊ Adjective Agreement: Understanding how adjectives agree in GENDER and NUMBER
    with the nouns they describe.
◊ Basic Prepositions: Learning common prepositions like "à," "de," "pour," "sur," "dans," etc.
◊ Telling Time: Expressing time in French using the 24-hour clock.
◊ Describing People and Things: Using adjectives to describe people and objects.
◊ Common Irregular Verbs: Introducing a few irregular verbs like "être," "avoir," "faire."
◊ Vocabulary Building: Learning basic vocabulary related to everyday topics such as family, hobbies, school, food, etc.

These topics provide students with a foundation in French grammar and vocabulary, enabling them to communicate in simple everyday situations. The emphasis is on building a strong base for further language learning in higher-level French classes.

IN ADDITION...
You will find that the study of French will help you develop a better appreciation for your own country and culture as you expand your worldview and discover the various French-speaking (francophone) areas of the globe. You will discover cultural differences and similarities and you may realize how much French civilization has contributed to your life, wherever you live.

Studying French will also help you develop a better understanding of English (or your first language, if it is a European language) and how it works. In addition, you may eventually be able to read articles, books and poems written in French, or be able to travel to a French-speaking country with greater ease and awareness by building a good fundamental knowledge of the language beforehand. You may also be better able to enjoy listening to French music and viewing French language films.
