Since 2017, hip-hop music has been the dominant music genre in the United States and many parts of the world, surpassing pop and rock. It has come to define modern music. In this one time class, we will take a look at it's origins in the Bronx, New York in the 1970's, it's four cultural pillars, it's evolution through the 1980's -2000's, and the discuss the many sub-genres that splintered from it. We will compare the different types from the original party sound, to the socio-political messages, to the modern era that combines both. We will examine how this style has been incorporated into other music genres and discuss why it has become the most popular music genre.

This class will be presented in 3 short lesson videos posted Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Each lesson video will be accompanied by different videos, activities, and worksheets. Students are encouraged to share their favorite songs and artists on the classroom page.

Orientación para padres
This class will be discussing different artists and listening to parts of songs from hip-hop. Due to graphic language and song topics, many artists will only be discussed but not have their songs shared. Parents are advised that students will be learning about artists that do include adult language and topic matter in their songs. All discussions will be at an age appropriate level. There may be some Youtube videos that are seen during this class. I will share my screen and learners will not need to access them on their own.
