~`BLK History Month Edition`~ ~The Celebration Continues!~ Since 1619, the Sons and Daughters of Africa have excelled in every facet of American life. We take a look at many of these achievements and consider the impact of Black Excellence in America. This dynamic 8-week course focuses on the history of Black people in America by highlighting the achievement of notable figures. At the same time we consider the concept of Black Excellence as protest and, occasionally, a dividing issue within Black communities. There is so much good news to share! Each week, students will vote on which stories I will highlight to ensure that we include the people that interest them the most. Learners should come to class prepared to hear stories about well known, lesser known and unknown folks who have made their mark in the following categories: Week One: What Is Black Excellence Week Two: Technology- From Thomas L. Jennings to Week Three: Sports - From Charles Follis to Gabby Douglas Week Four: Religion- From Richard Allen to William Barber Week Five: Health- From James McCune Smith to Patrice Harris Week Six: Academia- From Sarah Jane Woodson Early to Mary Schmidt Campbell Week Seven: Young Excellence- From Little Stevie Wonder to Marsai Martin Week Eight: Big Ideas We will focus on one category per week but will only be scratching the surface! Our class will include short videos, music and virtual museum tours. **Lecture Style Class** 75% lecture - to include slides, short video and music. 25% conversation. This is a MEDIUM participation class. All students are required to appear on camera at the start of class and encouraged to contribute to the conversation. Occasionally, special guests are invited to support classroom discussion. Learners will be informed before class meetings when special guests will be present.

Licenciatura en Historia desde Hampton University
I HAD to study history at Hampton University (B.A.) and U.S. History at Southern Methodist University (M.A. abt) because I found the complex topics and dynamic issues endlessly fascinating. Teaching high school and college history felt more like a prize than a job as I loved sharing our nation's struggles and stories with young learners and challenging them to think critically. Today I spend most of my time guiding teens to and through top colleges and universities. While I am no longer in the classroom I still find opportunities to guide people through the topics and timelines of America from time to time, and this is one of those times.
I am excited to be a part of the Outschool community and thankful to the learners for allowing me to share both of my passions at the same time. Is there anything better than teaching middle schoolers and high school students? I really don't think so!
