Wish Tree by Katherine Appelgate “Red is an oak tree who is many rings old. Red is the neighborhood "wishtree"―people write their wishes on pieces of cloth and tie them to Red's branches. Along with a crow named Bongo and other animals who seek refuge in Red's hollows, this wishtree watches over the neighborhood. You might say Red has seen it all. Until a new family moves in.” ~Katherine Appelgate Throughout this class, we will read together, as well as independently read assigned chapters for homework. During each session, students will follow along, read aloud, and participate in discussions related to homework and in-class readings. As we read, we will strengthen comprehension using various strategies, such as visualization, making predictions, making connections, character development, vocabulary, and problems/solutions that arise as we read. We will play various virtual games to build confidence, teamwork, and comprehension. These games may include: Stick Man, Pictionary, Think-Pair-Share, 20 Questions. Weekly Homework: Students will be assigned a portion of the book to read independently each week, along with assigned short answer questions/journal writing. Final Activity/Project: Students will write a paragraph focusing on the theme of kindness and friendship while making connections. Students will also create a Wishtree of their own. Students will be assessed on their understanding of Wishtree through their in-class responses and written homework assignments.

Foundations for Success
Let's build your child's foundation together!
As an Orton-Gillingham instructor, I know the importance of learning ways to increase fluency in spelling and reading with multisyllabic words. I have been working with children of various abilities and ages using what I have learned about the science of reading."
"As an avid reader, I understand the magic of stories. 'Reading is a passport to countless adventures.'" ~Mary Pope Osborne (Magic Tree House Book Series).
My name is Caryn. I have nearly 30 years experience as an educator. I studied Sociology and Early Childhood Education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and earned my teaching license from Framingham State University. Throughout my career I have gained experience teaching a variety of age groups, (pre-school-high school), individually, small group, and as a classroom teacher.
As an educator, I worked with students with a variety of abilities and disabilities, including ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, language disorders, and English Language Learners. I provided individualized instruction, for students of all ages, in an acute care psychiatric facility. During my time in the classroom, I had a variety of training on the Science of Reading, different reading programs, and the implementation of various literacy assessments. I was hired as a math liaison to coordinate math curriculum, assessments, and school programs for students and teachers in kindergarten through 3rd grade. I also have the Massachusetts Sheltered English Immersion Endorsement.
In 2014, I started Alphabetic Principles to provide individual academic support to students ranging from kindergarten through high school, in phonemic awareness, reading comprehension and fluency, writing, and math fluency. I received extensive training in Orton-Gillingham and Dyscalculia interventions for all age groups. I have provided support for students who receive speech and language therapy in a private practice, and also worked with other educators to administer initial language and math assessments. I have also developed classes and curriculum for small groups of homeschoolers.
