This five week flex book club will be centered around the beloved novel, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, by Kate DiCamillo. It is one of my favorites and I look forward to bringing this beautiful story to life with my learners in this class! Due to this being a flexible schedule class, there will not be any live meetings. The readings and assignments for each week will be posted by 8:00 p.m. EST on Sunday evenings. That is so you can print any materials needed or desired. The assignment postings will include a video lesson with read-aloud of the assigned chapters, along with a short comprehension packet that contains questions for the learner to answer. The required assignments each week will be to:
•read the assigned chapters (the learner can read independently prior to the video lesson or wait and read along with me in the video)
•post a comment in the classroom with his/her ideas for the titles for the chapters, as well as answering the discussion question for the week

There will also be extra, OPTIONAL assignments or activities:
•comprehension packets with questions to answer about the text; it does not need to be submitted to the teacher, but can be completed to strengthen understanding of the text.
•learners will be encouraged to draw what they are visualizing while they listen to the read aloud of the story and then they can upload a photo of their picture to the classroom
•learners are strongly encouraged to give other learners feedback on their comments, pictures and contributions to our class discussions

I will provide feedback to learners in the classroom, in response to their comments and ideas provided, as well as respond to any questions. This type of class is ideal for learners in need of a flexible schedule, as well as those that are uncomfortable with the online format where live interaction is included. It may be helpful for the learner's parent or guardian to view the new assignment with the learner at the beginning of the week, to help clarify directions.

Week 1: We will read chapters 1-5. Learners will brainstorm titles for the chapters with what they would name them and post their ideas in the classroom, as well as answer a discussion question about that section of the text. Students are strongly encouraged to respond to a teacher's and/or classmate's comment. If a learner has a drawing for the text section, please upload a photo to the classroom if the learner would like to share it, so others can see it.

Week 2: We will read chapters 6-11.

Week 3: We will read chapters 12-16.

Week 4: We will read chapters 17-21.

Week 5: We will read chapters 22-27. There will be an optional final project that students will be able to complete, if they would like to.

During this FLEX book club, please reach out with any questions or concerns. The book club will be held with 1-10 learners. If there is only one learner the FLEX book club will still be held, however the feedback and interaction will only be possible with the learner and teacher without peer interaction. Also, this book contains deep themes and topics that may be hard for children to process, so please message me if you have concerns or would like to know the specific content. However, this high-quality book is one that children love and will remember and carry with them. They will learn about the power of love from this story of a china rabbit, Edward Tulane!

Hello! My name is Sarah King. I love teaching kids to read and helping them read to learn! I enjoy teaching anything that is reading related, including the areas of comprehension, phonics, phonemic awareness, spelling and vocabulary. I also like teaching writing and social studies. On Outschool, I mostly do individual reading tutoring and I enjoy it so much! I enjoy getting to know my learners and helping them to grow as readers, as well as increasing their confidence and interest in reading. I also have a couple second grade reading and math camps that are fun to teach, as well as a few other interest-based summer camps. I appreciate Outschool because this platform has helped me with making connections with so many wonderful children and families from all over the United States, as well as other countries around the world!

I have been an elementary teacher for 22 years. I was a second-grade teacher for 17 years and currently I am a fifth-grade teacher. My experience includes teaching all subjects, but I am now a departmentalized teacher and teach reading and writing. I also have experience teaching online ESL (English as a Second Language). I have my master's degree in education and I am a certified K-8 teacher in the state of Maine.

I love learning and passing on this love of learning to my students. Learning is best when it is interactive, fun and engaging. I believe I am a patient, encouraging and especially an enthusiastic teacher. I love smiling and laughing with my students!

I am a mom and have two sons, ages 17 and 21. In my free time, I enjoy photography, reading, live music, yoga and taking my dogs on walks. I look forward to teaching your child!
