Ser humano: una clase de escritura y literatura mundial contemporánea a nivel universitario

Tarea
2-4 horas por semana. Learners will be expected to complete 2-4 hours of work a week outside of class. There will be group activities during class time, but all outside class work will be individual in nature. Reading of the book will take place entirely outside of class. We will move through the course at a rigorous pace. We will move through the novels quickly yet thoroughly.
Evaluación
Assessment will consist of informal observation of discussion, writing assignments, and periodic "quizzes". All assessments will take place in class except for the writing assignments which will be partially written outside of class.
Calificación
Grades are available upon request.

The four novels we will read are The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, Waiting by Ha Jin, Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.  

In addition to the four novels, we will read How to Read Literature Like a Professor: A Lively and Entertaining Guide to Reading Between the Lines by Thomas C. Foster, and supplementary nonfiction pieces, including personal essays. Students will also write three pieces of writing and complete a culminating project.  

During Weeks 1-2, we will read The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, and there will be a writing assignment.
Essential Questions to Explore:
When are you a human? When are you not a human?  How do responsibility, alienation, and identity affect humanity?

During Weeks 3-5, we will read Waiting by Ha Jin, and there will be a writing assignment.
Essential Questions to Explore:
How are love and humanity connected? Is love universal?

During Weeks 6-8, we will read Purple Hibiscus Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and there will be a writing assignment.

How does family relate to humanity?

During Weeks 9-12, we will read One Hundred Years of Solitude Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Learners will complete and present their final projects.

How are time, fate, and human nature interconnected?

Between classes, students will be expected to complete the required reading, and work on any assignments.  Students should come to class prepared to discuss the current book and topic.  Discussions are a safe place where everyone can be heard.  Students are asked to participate in all parts of this class with an open mind and heart.

Please look at reviews and other information about each book, and be sure that you are comfortable with your learner reading these titles. There is mature language and situations in some of these titles, but they are important reads, and I believe your learner will grow and expand by reading them. You can support your student with these topics by talking to them as they read, and helping them process anything that is troubling them. You can also always reach out to me.
