In this 12-week live online grammar course, students will learn the basics of identifying the parts of speech, the sentence elements, analyzing, and diagramming sentences. Learning sentence diagramming and analysis is a part of most classical curricula, but this interactive class is accessible to any student who needs a better understanding of grammar. 24 lessons//12 Weeks
Week 1Lesson 1Four Types of SentencesStudents will learn what makes a sentence a sentence. Then we will identify the four types of sentences: declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory.Lesson 2Nouns, Pronouns & VerbsWe will learn the definitions of nouns, pronouns, and verbs. Students will practice identifying and giving examples of each.Week 2Lesson 3Practice & ReviewWe will practice identifying all the grammar elements and sentence types learned. Students will write each sentence type and share their sentences with the class.Lesson 4Subject, Predicate & Helping VerbsStudents will learn the principal parts of a sentence and how to diagram a basic sentence. We will learn the Helping Verb Chant.Week 3Lesson 5Practice & ReviewWe will practice analyzing and diagramming sentences.Lesson 6Articles, & AdjectivesStudents will learn the definition of adjectives and how to identify them. They will learn that articles, a type of determiner, are also adjectives. We will diagram sentences with adjectives.Week 4Lesson 7Practice & ReviewWe will practice analyzing and diagramming sentences.Lesson 8Adverbs, Proper Nouns & Proper AdjectivesStudents will learn the difference between common and proper nouns and how to identify them. They will learn the definition of an adverb and how to identify and diagram it.Week 5Lesson 9Practice & ReviewWe will practice identifying proper nouns and adjectives. We will analyze and diagram sentences.Lesson 10Predicate Verbs & Direct ObjectsStudents will review predicate verbs, learn the definition of direct objects, and how to identify and label them in a sentences.Week 6Lesson 11Practice & ReviewWe will practice analyzing and diagramming sentences.Lesson 12Linking Verbs & Predicate NominativesStudents will review helping verbs. Then they will learn the definition of a predicate nominative and how to identify predicate nominatives and diagram them. We will discuss the difference between the linking verbs, helping verbs, and predicate verbs, and how to know which is which.Week 7Lesson 13Practice & ReviewWe will practice analyzing and diagramming sentences.Lesson 14Linking Verbs & Predicate AdjectivesWe will continue to discuss the difference between the linking verbs, helping verbs, and predicate verbs, and how to know which is which. Students will learn the definition of a predicate adjective and how to identify and diagram it.Week 8Lesson 15Practice & ReviewWe will practice analyzing and diagramming sentences.Lesson 16Prepositional PhrasesStudents will learn what a preposition is. This class will focus on familiarity with the list of prepositions.Week 9Lesson 17Prepositions & Objects of the PrepositionStudents will learn how to identify, analyze, and diagram sentences with prepositional phrases.Lesson 18Practice & ReviewWe will practice analyzing and diagramming sentences.Week 10Lesson 19Adverbial or Adjectival?Students will learn how to determine if a prepositional phrase is modifying a noun or a verb. We will then analyze and diagram sentences with adverbial and adjectival prepositional phrases.Lesson 20Practice & ReviewWe will practice analyzing and diagramming sentences.Week 11Lesson 21Sensory Linking VerbsStudents will be introduced to the list of common sensory linking verbs (looks, seems, appears, etc.). They will learn how to determine of a verb is being used as a predicate verb or linking verb.Lesson 22Practice & ReviewWe will practice analyzing and diagramming sentences.Week 12Lesson 23Indirect ObjectsStudents will learn the definition of indirect objects and how to identify and diagram them.Lesson 24Practice & ReviewWe will practice analyzing and diagramming sentences.
- Students will strengthen their understanding of the English sentence. They will learn to identify the parts of speech and grammar elements. The will learn how to use symbols to analyze the sentences and then diagram them. Understanding sentence rules and structure will improve the student's writing mechanics.
I have a Bachelor of English Literature from Texas State University. I have worked as a classical English teacher teaching grammar and sentence diagramming; before that, I taught sentence analysis and diagramming as a homeschool mom. At Texas State, I took coursework in Modern Syntax, an advanced grammar course.

Students should have grade level reading skills. Previous knowledge of nouns and verbs is helpful, but not necessary.
