Experiencia de clase

Research supports children learning languages at young ages, and coding is a type of language. The earlier a child becomes interested in coding and begins learning to code, the stronger that skill will become.

This introductory, "pre-reader to coding" teaches children what coding is, why it is important, and how to do entry level coding. It does not use a specific "language" at this point, but will teach your child basic coding concepts to apply to other programming languages, like Scratch, Java, etc. For specific language recommendations (i.e., digital coding), you can check out code.org and Scratch. Both are free and have great options for students.

On Day 1, we will discuss what it means to code and how much of our lives are impacted by coding. We will discuss jobs that people have that are related to coding. Then, we will do our first coding "puzzles" together. These are attachments you will need to print for your learner, an average of five per day, and will be sent to you daily in your learner’s Outschool portal, on the day before each class. Initially, the puzzles are quite simple as the children get comfortable with the process we are using in the class. Since this class is designed for children with no coding experience, I incorporate strategies that they are already familiar with; for example, using a "marker" (penny) to track where they are working in the puzzle so they don’t lose their location within the puzzle, much how they have learned to "track" in lessons at their school. The focus for the puzzles on Day 1 is tracking in the correct direction.

On Day 2, we will review the tracking process on Day 1, then extend their knowledge using a "block" (obstacle) that they must maneuver around in the puzzle. I will always model for them what to do as well as support them throughout each day. It is important to me that your child has fun!

Day 3 builds upon their knowledge from Days 1 and 2. The "bite" is introduced, which in coding represents and action. Again, I will model for them and talk them through each puzzle.

On Day 4, the puzzles will get increasingly harder by moving the "target" (ending goal) to various places within the puzzle. The "repeat" block will be introduced.

Finishing the week on Day 5, we will review all coding concepts learned, do more practice with the "repeat" block and I will show an online coding site, helping them make connections with their next step in their coding journey.

Each puzzle is basic and the difficulty builds throughout the week but is not too difficult for a young child. It will be fun, lively, and engaging -- children will gain self-confidence in their coding skills as well as building confidence speaking to the class on Zoom.

I will send you handouts to print the day before each class.

**This class is not for a child who already knows how to code.

Children who learn to code can improve the following skills, plus it's FUN!

•	Logical thinking
•	Verbal and written skills
•	Perseverance
•	Visualization of abstract concepts
•	Application of math skills
•	Application to the real world
•	Fosters creativity
•	Found in many STEM programs
•	Planning and organizing thoughts
•	Communication skills
•	Confidence in problem solving
•	Helps prepare for the future
Metas de aprendizaje
Entry level students will learn and apply basic coding. They will share their coding with others in the group and build self-esteem though engaging discussions.
