This 5-week course is part of a five-part series designed for highly motivated students who are ready to dive into the exciting world of Japanese language. I started learning Japanese, myself, at 18 years old. Therefore, I understand not only which grammar or vocabulary can be tricky for teens but how to explain these in a way that is clear and accessible to English speakers. In addition, I will help students avoid common pronunciation pitfalls that arise when first learning Japanese. My teaching style is relaxed and always welcomes mistakes - they are how we learn! Lastly, as someone who has studied, lived and worked in Japan, I am very excited to deepen students' knowledge about Japanese culture. Course at a glance: This course will have students reading, writing, listening and speaking in Japanese. Each week (consisting of two classes), students will learn: 5-10 words, 1-2 grammar points and 1-2 cultural focuses. Classes may incorporate a mixture or activities, games, discussion or multimedia (such as slides, videos or audio). Each lesson (and homework) will incorporate vocabulary or grammar from previous lesson(s) so that material is constantly reinforced. There will be an optional test at the end of the course. Assessment: This course can be taken with or without assessment. Students who would like to receive regular homework, tests and feedback may do so for no additional charge. **NOTE** - This course is only open to students who have previously taken Parts 1 and 2 in this series. - This course is designed for students who can *already* read the Hiragana alphabet. -This course will respond to the unique needs of the students and, therefore, the pace of the course may vary greatly depending on the students. -While some courses teach the Hiragana and Katakana alphabet back-to-back, this course will solely utilize Hiragana in order to get students completely comfortable using this alphabet first. This also frees up students to get more practice with grammar, speaking and listening so that they can say more right from the beginning. - The 'Culture Focus' (see schedule below) is decided week-to-week and is dictated by the students' interests, current events etc. Culture Focus example: How Japanese students, not janitors, clean their schools. What do you think of this tradition? Week 1 Vocab: here, there, over there, where, Cafe, toilet, school, shop Grammar: Where is____? It's here/there/over there Week 2 Vocab: also/too, happy, sad, sleepy, energetic Grammar: Japanese particle も for creating also/too sentences. Ex, "I am happy too". Phrase: 'Really?' 'Is that so?' 'I see'. (ほんとうですか、そうですか、そうです) Cultural Focus: Week 3 - Vocab: high school, homework, naps, TV, traveling -Grammar: Learn how to use particle noun + が for 'I like (noun), I don't like (noun)' (X がすきです/じゃないです). - Cultural Focus Week 4 Vocab: awesome, horrible, disgusting, cool, expensive Grammar: Learn Japanese particles よ and ね Cultural Focus Week 5 Review Optional take-home Test

A little about me:
Hi, I'm Jacqueline and thanks for visiting my profile! I have been heavily steeped in both Japanese language and culture for over 20 years. Graduating with honors, I have a BA in East Asian Studies and two minors in Japanese language and Philosophy. I studied Japanese in Kobe, Japan briefly as an exchange student. In addition, I lived and worked in Sendai, Japan after graduation for two years as an elementary and middle school teacher. It was there my love for teaching was born. While there, I also obtained a certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language issued by Sendai Board of Education, as well as both coached and judged regional English language competitions at the middle school level.
Upon returning home to the U.S I have tutored both children and adults in Japanese, successfully ran a Japanese conversation club for several years, and worked in a Montessori environment with children ages 2-12. I have given several presentations to elementary and middle school students about both Japanese language and culture and currently teach Japanese for an online high school. Lastly, I have successfully taught my daughter Japanese.
In addition, I recently graduated in 2021 from the University of Nottingham with an MA in Applied Linguistics, receiving the highest academic award of Distinction. As a graduate student, most of my research was concentrated in nonverbal communication, such as, body language, gesture and humor. Other areas of research were second language acquisition, culture shock, and psycholinguistics. I am also currently pursing my TEFL certification and hope to offer English lessons to Japanese students on Outschool soon.
I live on the east coast of the U.S with my husband, our 14 year old daughter, our two crazy parakeets and one hamster. In my spare time I enjoy learning new languages (I'm learning Italian and Norwegian currently), hiking in the mountains, music writing, photography, travel, reading up the latest science/ biology (huge science nerd!), cooking, and learning to care for my small urban garden.
About my teaching style:
I try to make sure that whatever I teach is fun, relatable, engaging and interactive. I also make sure that kids know mistakes are welcome. That's how we learn!
Thanks so much for reading, and I look forward to getting the chance to teach your child something new!
*My video is out of date now. I will try and get a new one up soon! :)
