Latin is anything but dead! As a homeschooler, my parents *forced me* to study Latin - and I thought they were crazy! What I once saw was a drag, has turned into one of the greatest joys of my life! From learning about Roman culture, catching a travel bug, and traveling all over the heart of the Roman Empire: Italy, to knowing the etymology of 60-90% of English language words and being able to easily read and communicate in the Romantic Languages - knowing Latin is a treasured gift! I love giving back to the community, and I am excited to offer this class on Outschool. In Unit 1, we are introduced to the Pompeian banker Lucius Caecilius Iucundus and his family until the eruption of Vesuvius on August 24, AD 79. As we follow his life, in story-format, we are introduced to the Latin Language as well as the Roman world. As we are introduced to vocabulary words, we will seek to link them to words we know in English as well as new words to build our vocabulary such as… Undulate - to move up or down, which comes from the Latin word “Unda”, meaning Wave Defenestrate - to throw someone out the window, which comes from the Latin word “Fenestra”, meaning Window This class will cover stages 7-12 of the Cambridge Latin Course - Unit 1 Stage 7: cena Stage 8: gladiatores Stage 9: thermae Stage 10: rhetor Stage 11: candidati Stage 12: Vesuvius Part 1 & II of this class cover Cambridge Latin Course - Unit 1, after which time students will be prepared to take the National Latin Exam - Introduction to Latin online in March of 2023 Latin is for everyone! - Latin is a wonderful preparation aid for the SAT as well as other high stakes testing - Helpful for students who plan to study medicine or go into a career in the sciences. - Introduces students to the Romantic Languages such as Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and French Friend Latin: amicum Spanish: amigo/a Italian: amica/o Portuguese: Amiga/o French: Ami/ie Voice Latin: vox Spanish: voz Italian: voce Portuguese: voz French: Voix Time Latin: tempus Spanish: tiempo Italian: tempo Portuguese: tempo French: temps
