Ever wonder why good spellers are also good readers? Research shows that spelling (encoding) and reading (decoding) enhance and reinforce each other because they both rely on the relationship between letters and sounds. Spelling skills help a child see relationship patterns in language and how words are put together. This knowledge, in turn, helps a child to see these patterns in words, thus facilitating the reading process. Understanding that the English language follows a certain set of rules, makes it easier to apply these rules to reading. In this course, we will review the following rules and principles of spelling: Qu Rule - always put a u after the letter q. ( quit, quarry) Two sounds of c and g. ( city, magic) Ei/ie Rule - write i before e except after c. ( believe) Silent e Rule - when a word ends in silent e, drop the e when adding an ending. ( like, liking) Adding Ending to Words that end in y - change the y to i when adding an ending to a word that ends with consonant y. ( party, parties) Added Endings - double the final consonant of a word that ends with a single vowel and consonant. ( stop, stopping) Added s and es - (bench, benches/ cup, cups) We will also review a few irregularly spelled words, commonly known as sight words. (said, what) Below is the schedule of skills presented. Week 1 - Add s and es and Silent e Rule Week 2 - Ei/ie Rules Week 3 - Adding Endings to Words that end in y Week 4 - Qu Rule, two sounds of c and g Week 5 - Added Endings The class follows the format of I DO/WE DO/YOU DO. I encourage dialogue in my sessions; no answer is wrong. I look forward to seeing your super speller in my class!

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
Maestría en Educación desde Salem College
Hello! My name is Benita Brown. I teach reading through phonics instruction. I have an undergraduate degree in Elementary Education from Appalachian State University and a graduate degree in Language and Literacy from Salem College. I also have a National Board Certification in Reading Studies. I have an additional certification with the North Carolina School Improvement Project.
When I was a very little girl, my mother, a teacher, would bring home books from her school library for me to read. I loved to hold the books in my hands and feel the smoothness of the front and back covers. I loved to turn each page and look at the letters in black ink. When I would open the books and begin to read, I became lost in a world of fun, fantasy, and even fright as the words unfolded before me. There is nothing like the joy of settling down with a good book and becoming immersed in new stories and fresh ideas. I want to make sure that every child has the opportunity to not only learn to read but to learn to LOVE to read. I believe that learning to read can be accomplished with explicit instruction in phonics and decoding. Once the sound-to-symbol
(sound/letter relationship) connection becomes automatic, a child can learn to decode almost anything. When that happens, the brain is free to focus on the content of what is being read. In other words, when decoding is effortless, a child can read for meaning- and more importantly, enjoyment. Let me show your child how fun learning to read can be. Join me as I show your child the wonders that life has to offer by opening up the pages of a good book.
