This class is a non-graded course. We will practice many exercises together in class. Completing some of the at-home math practice exercises daily is recommended. We will review those together in class. Each week in the Outschool classroom, I post screenshots of some of the notes and exercises from our time in class.Experiencia de clase

As a person who struggled with math as a younger student, I can empathize with and relate to students as they try to learn new and difficult concepts. I display patience with the learners, give them time to respond, and offer encouragement for their efforts. In this live group class, students will meet twice a week to learn and practice basic math foundational skills. Some topics covered include division with 3-digit divisors, multiplying mixed numbers, percent of a number, and picture graphs. During each session, the lesson will be introduced and practice problems will be completed with the students. For extra practice, learners will be given some math exercises to complete at home. (Answers will be given for parents to check their child's work.) Learners should bring their completed work to class the following day to review the answers as a class. Students may join the class any week. Come prepared to listen and learn. When the learner's camera is open, I can more readily monitor the student's understanding (usually through facial expressions), and learners can interact and experience a similar classroom environment.

My name is Vanleer. Children can learn math! Whether it’s struggling with math concepts or working at an accelerated pace, I look forward to helping your child experience success in math!

It's so rewarding getting to help students progress in math, while helping them build a solid math foundation. I enjoy working with children of all ages and am passionate about helping children learn math. I use various methods -- including manipulatives, problem solving skills, puzzles and games. My years of teaching experience allow me to recognize areas in which a student is struggling or advancing.
I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics Education and my Master’s degree in Elementary Education. As a state-licensed math teacher for the past 25 years, my experience includes teaching public school classes (grades 7-12), private tutoring (grades K-12), and facilitating homeschool co-op classes. I have been an online tutor since 2017. For the past 20 years, I have been homeschooling my three children, including a college graduate and a recent high school graduate.
My interests include gardening, baking, photography, spending time with my children and learning something new every day.
