Welcome future biologists and nature lovers! Did you know that some scientists and their students have been seen and heard barking in the canyons and mountains of the desert southwest? Teacher John will relate some stories and answer learners' questions about frogs, in particular a tree frog that is known to bark like a little dog as part of its mating call. In this 30-minute introduction to the field of herpetology, the study of amphibians and reptiles, students will be engaged in a dialogue and question-answer format. We will look at some slides from the field and talk about frogs that bark. Learners do not have to have any prior experience or knowledge but if they know something about amphibians or reptiles (perhaps they have an unusual pet!) they are welcome to share it. The first five minutes of class will be introductions. The body of 20 minutes will be story-telling from an experienced wildlife biologist with an open invitation for students to ask questions. In the last five minutes, we’ll discuss what’s next, in order to gauge students’ interest and find out more about the frogs in their own area of the country.
Metas de aprendizaje
Learners will improve their understanding of tree frogs and the range of habitats they can be found in. Learners will also get an inside look at how biological field research is done with a case study of this unusual method for gathering data and then finding out how that data is used.
