Middle school is hard enough...without being the NEW KID. Is your reader ready to gently explore how stereotypes about race impact the daily life of a seventh grader making his way as one of the few kids of color in a new school? We'll dive in and practice our own graphic novel page creation plus discuss why this wholesome book was banned in some school districts. Reading the book beforehand is optional, critical thinking and having fun is mandatory! As a trauma-informed, consent-based educator, I will always invite your reader to participate but never force or shame them if they do not. My goal is to make the class so engaging, they simply can't resist joining in the discussion!

Orientación para padres
From Common Sense Media: "Parents need to know that Jerry Craft's New Kid is a graphic novel that won the 2020 Newbery Medal and the 2020 Coretta Scott King Author Award. It chronicles the year-long adjustment of an African American middle-schooler from Washington Heights to seventh grade at a private, predominantly White middle school at the opposite end of Manhattan, in the Bronx. Cartoonist Jerry Craft illustrates what it's like to be not just the new kid, but also one of the few students of color at a private school."
