There is an exit ticket at the end, and I informally keep track of student responses throughout the lesson on different questions to cater my teaching to learner needs.

Experiencia de clase

Nivel de inglés: desconocido
Grado de EE. UU. 3 - 4
In this live, one-time class with a certified math teacher, students will learn how to find patterns in place value and think about numbers that are ten times bigger or smaller than themselves. All math facts will be related to bees, incorporating unique facts about the importance of bees and what they do. Students will design a Bee Hotel for the garden, understanding the importance of bees, and place value will be naturally interwoven into the lessons! Having a solid understanding of our place value system will lend itself to students gaining deeper comprehension of addition and subtraction strategies as well as help them solve mental math problems. This class is perfect for students who are needing support thinking mathematically or are struggling with adding by ten. Advanced 2nd graders and 3rd/4th graders needing a review are ideal learners in this class, but anyone wanting to do some math problems and learn how to make a bee hotel is welcome!

The learning outcome for this class is:
1. I can find patterns using place value. (3.NBT.A.3)

This class will have minimal math done. Its focus is gaining a solid understanding of the concept of place value to support math understanding that will help students do addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Following classes will build on this place value concept as well as have more math equations where students can practice using the skills learned and doing basic math facts.

The class is structured around the math concept being introduced with bee facts and information. Students will engage with each other and reflect on place value throughout the lesson, which is guided by engaging powerpoint slides. My teaching style is to guide discussions and model different activities, but to get students talking, reflecting, and thinking as much as possible. This is where true learning takes place!

No prior understanding of place value is required.

Metas de aprendizaje

The learning outcome for this class is:

1. I can find patterns using place value.
~1.NBT.C.5- Given a two-digit number, mentally find 10 more or 10 less than the number, without having to count; explain the reasoning used.
~2.NBT.B.8- Mentally add 10 or 100 to a given number 100-900, and mentally subtract 10 or 100 from a given number 100-900.
~4.NBT.A.1- Recognize that in a multi-digit whole number, a digit in one place represents ten times what it represents in the place to its right. For example, recognize that 70070=10 by applying concepts of place value and division

Orientación para padres
Ensure that you are careful when approaching your Bee Hotel after you set it up. Keeping a safe distance is ideal after you make it, but go and observe and see who is living there! If you decide to change its location or need to approach it for some reason, either wear a bee suit or loose clothing with long sleeves and long pants. You can put a rubber band at the bottom of your pants so they don't crawl up your pants either, but this is likely not necessary. Consider placing it in a location where there is low traffic and where you won't have to be near it to mow.
