Parents can practice at home, providing students clear 1, 2, and 3 step auditory directions (depending on their proficiencies.) 1. Be sure you have your child's attention and eye contact. 2. Minimize distractions. 3. Speak calmly and quietly. Tell them--don't ask. 4. Give short instructions 1 at a time. 5. Number your directions. (First, do ___. Then, do ___). 6. Use “wait time.” Give students a minute to think before repeating your direction. 7. Check for understanding. Ask them to repeat directions back to you. 8. Repeat the direction if needed. If the child if still not able to complete the direction, break the directions down into smaller components and repeat.Evaluación
Students will be assessed informally through participation, questioning, and by completing a pirate-themed writing task. (Younger children will "draw" their writing assignment). Students will share with their classmates if they choose!Experiencia de clase

“Ahoy, matey! Yer comin’ with us on this wild adventure, or you’ll have to walk the plank!” This class is specifically designed to incorporate listening and comprehension skills with the delightfully fun book, “How I Became a Pirate” by Melinda Long. Students will read the story, answer questions, and follow directions given throughout. Open dialogue is encouraged as children learn good communication and questioning skills through speaking, as well! They will engage as they are asked to repeat phrases, answer comprehension questions, and follow directions to complete a writing/drawing task with the story. It is important for children to be able to follow instructions, not only to keep them safe, but so that they can function effectively across different environments (home, school, the grocery store, etc.). Being able to follow directions requires specific vocabulary development, attention to the task, and receptive/expressive language skills, all of which we will explore in this class. Students will review preschool concepts and directional vocabulary in the context of this engaging story! (NOTE: Young children learn vocabulary, sequencing, and prediction skills through repetition of stories. If you feel your child would benefit from hearing the story again, I would love to have them join me in additional sections of the class!)
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will practice answering questions while making inferences and predictions. Each student will be given the opportunity to read aloud as the text is shared via a document camera.
