Important Notes: All of my classes are inclusive and welcome the neurodiverse child. CEFR: B1-B2 or above. Class is available in English and Spanish. This themed class celebrates America with a general overview of our country's historical highlights, following a timeline starting with the ancestral presence throughout the land of Native Americans (showcasing one of the many Nations, The Wampanoags and their record keeping wampum belts); paintings depicting the arrival of Christopher Columbus, the European Settlers, Mayflower, Thanksgiving; pieces of luxurious silverware used during colonial times and made by Paul Revere, Jr.; paintings portraying the American Revolution, the Declaration of Independence, the Civil War, The War of 1812; the Statue of Liberty, and more. Learner completes a virtual tour of Washington D.C.'s buildings and memorials, such as The Lincoln Memorial, monuments to the different wars and presidents, and other sites such as the Arlington National Cemetery, the Library of Congress, the Pentagon, and the three honorable buildings housing the three branches of government: the White House, the Supreme Court, the Capitol (including the dome's fresco and other historical paintings). Class includes visual artists' works inspired on the American experience, such as the West renditions by Frederic Remington, Edwin Church, Normal Rockwell's Four Freedoms and The Problem We All Live With (1964, showing Ruby Bridges walking escorted by U.S.Marshalls on her first day attending an integrated school); silkscreens by Andy Warhol and Jasper Johns and other symbols of America. All works of art and artifacts were selected from major museums: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Smithsonian, the Art Institute of Chicago, Library of Congress and the Capitol. After the completion of the class, Learners may want to be prepared to paint their country's flag in any one of the different art styles covered in class from classical to modern. Thus, it is suggested that Learners leave additional free time at the end of the class so they may work on their art piece. This class is a great introduction to our Nation's capital and it would be an excellent preparatory class to any planned visit to Washington, D.C. Class is structured with a welcome and introduction time; the slide presentation invites engagement in the form of questions, comments, discussions. Class is taught in a historically accurate way, it is inclusive of many perspectives and interactive, in an environment that celebrates curiosity, and where Learner experiences the process of discovery as a fascinating, enriching, and kindness infused opportunity. Class size is kept small so Learner feels welcome to engage in the process. For these reasons, and for gauging Learner's interest level being able to adjust accordingly, I require open mics and video in my classes so there is a sense of community and engagement with the material. In our mindful, private class, Learner is asked to raise a hand when wishing to participate as this encourages grounding, patience, mutual respect, and deep listening skills bringing with itself a myriad of benefits. No previous experience is required.
