Qué está incluido

1 reunión en vivo
55 minutos horas de clase por semana
Tarea
1 hora por semana. I won't assign specific homework; however, sometimes a student needs a little more time to finish his or her painting after our class time ends. And when that happens, we love for students to bring back their finished painting to show us at the beginning of our next class!
Evaluación
There will be no formal assessment; however, we will take the time to hold up our drawings and paintings to celebrate and encourage each other's progress several times throughout our creative process and again at the end of class. I'll watch for opportunities to give more guidance or tips throughout the lesson as needed.

Experiencia de clase

Nivel Beginner
This continuing weekly art class is for students who love animals! In each lesson, we’ll create a drawing or painting of a different animal, so your child could easily jump any time between lessons. (No prior drawing or painting experience needed because I'll lead each child step-by-step through each lesson and include some options along the way, too.)

In each lesson, we’ll chat about the animal & look at its photo as we get settled in at the beginning of class. I’ll even show them a drawing or painting of my own if I’ve created one about that specific animal before. I love to create an atmosphere where students feel comfortable & encouraged to participate in our discussions throughout our class, especially when we are introducing the specific animal and when we are brainstorming about all the options to consider in their artwork. We’ll just practice our best manners to take turns talking & be attentive listeners when I’m giving instructions & demonstrating each step.

Sometimes our lesson will be completed in one class session. However, sometimes we will need 2 class sessions to finish because of the details of a particular animal, or if we are painting an animal, we will draw the animal in one lesson and paint it in the next. Other than when we need 2 class sessions to complete a whole lesson, your child will NOT need prior knowledge from earlier lessons in our class. So if your child is interested in joining our class, please just message me first so I can let you know which week begins a brand new lesson. (We'll usually focus on 2 or 3 different animals each month.)

Students will show us their drawings or paintings several times during and at the end of our class so we can celebrate and encourage each other's progress and success. This also helps me watch for opportunities to give more guidance or tips throughout the lesson.

Most of our classes will include drawing lessons but sometimes we will add paints to our drawings to add color when the texture of the animal is better suited for brushwork & paint instead of dry drawing tools. I’ll keep you posted in our classroom page each week about the supplies we will be using in the upcoming lesson so that you have plenty of time to gather them before class. (We’ll have a supply list that includes very common drawing tools that we’ll use on a regular basis. It will also include a few special dry drawing tools as well as some painting supplies that we’ll use in many of our lessons. Be sure to check our classroom page each week for supply instructions for the upcoming lesson.)

Just to give you an idea of the types of animals we cover over several seasons, here's some topics from our past plus what's coming up next:

Metas de aprendizaje
Students will learn about the identifying features & some interesting facts about specific animals as we draw or paint them. They will also learn drawing, shading and textural techniques in drawing and painting mediums and how to create a balanced composition while keeping the animal at the focal point.

Lista de útiles escolares
Most of our classes begin with a pencil drawing lesson and then we add color with paint or colorful drawing materials such as crayons or oil pastels or colored pencils. (We do not use markers in this class.) Please be sure to check our classroom page postings each week for supplies needed for the upcoming class so that you can help your child gather those before class time.

**REGULAR DRAWING SUPPLIES
Bring the following to every class unless otherwise posted in our classroom page:
Pencil, Eraser, Sharpener
Paper (8”X10” OR 9”X12” sketchbook or drawing paper)
Coloring Tools (crayons, colored pencils or twistable versions of either of those)
Tip: Please do not bring markers to class; they are not well-suited for blending and shading possibilities.

**SPECIAL DRY DRAWING SUPPLIES THAT MAY BE REQUESTED FOR A FEW LESSONS:
Kneaded Eraser and thin, soft Vine OR Willow Charcoal Sticks & Charcoal Pencils
Soft Chalk Pastels
Oil Pastels

**PAINTING SUPPLIES for WATERCOLOR PAINTING:
pencil, eraser, sharpener
9"x12" Watercolor Paper (or or 8”x10”)
A set of Watercolor Paints (just a simple set of 8 or 16 colors
A few Watercolor Paint Brushes in different sizes
Water in an open cup, can or jar
Paper Towels
Oil Pastels in a variety of colors (be sure they are NOT the type that can be blended with water--it would say it on the package if it is) (Crayons are an OPTIONAL SUBSTITUTION for oil pastels.)

**SUPPLY LIST for ACRYLIC PAINTING:
ONE 8"x10" or 9”x12” White ACRYLIC PAINT SURFACE (See Several Options Below):
Stretched Canvas, Canvas Panel/Board, or Acrylic Canvas Paper
(What are the differences? . . . Stretched Canvas has primed (coated white) canvas stretched over a wooden frame & stapled to the wood. Canvas Panel/Board feels more solid like the canvas is mounted/glued to a stiff cardboard. Acrylic Canvas Paper is thick, coated paper that is flexible but won't warp and tear as easily as other papers and comes in a pad of multiple sheets.)

ACRYLIC PAINTS: (not tempera, not watercolor, not oil)
I suggest a variety of different colors including Blue, Red, Yellow, White & Black plus also Green, Orange, Purple & Brown although your child may not choose to use all of the colors. (Thicker acrylic paint in tubes are the best consistency for our painting techniques. If possible, try to avoid using the thinner acrylics in plastic bottles that sound watery when shaken.)

PAPER PLATE to use as a paint palette. (Optional to use a plastic paint palette instead or even a disposable pie tin)

ACRYLIC PAINT BRUSHES in a variety of sizes. Include a couple of medium size ROUGH Flat Brushes (looks like a square on the tip but bristles are rough and a little prickly to the touch. Also include a couple of very small SMOOTH Acrylic Brushes (1 very small Round brush like a pencil tip shape and 1 slender Flat Square Shape) Please avoid brushes that are flimsy and bend when put under a stream of water. (Those are watercolor brushes instead of acrylic brushes.)

WATER in a metal can, plastic cup or glass jar.

Licenciatura en Educación desde Middle Tennessee State University (Bachelor of Science Degree in Educ: Art K-12 & Elem 1st-8th grades)
Hi, I'm Susan Garrison, a professional artist who also loves teaching kids! I've been drawing & painting all my life and teaching children for the past 3 decades. After earning my BS Degree in Art Education K-12 from Middle Tennessee State University, I've enjoyed teaching children 2D & 3D art lessons at my own art studio, online, and in public and private schools in grades K-12 in Tennessee and South Carolina. One of my specialties has been curriculum development at each of those schools. On weekends, my husband and I even work as a team to DJ weddings and receptions.

I love breaking art projects down into bite-size pieces of simple lines & shapes for children as I lead them through the lesson step-by-step, while still encouraging options along the way so that every piece is unique. Choosing a variety of my classes will help your child develop skills and techniques for creating realistic pieces as well as tap into & build upon the beauty of his or her imagination & creative mind. My class offerings include a variety of styles & use many types of art tools & surfaces. Some classes focus on famous artists & their styles to inspire our artwork. Blending those experiences help form a well-rounded young artist.

I delight in helping children enjoy the whole creative process that leads to a lifetime of creativity and not just the end results of a single painting. A child's imagination is valued greatly and will be encouraged in our lessons.
