In this one-time course, students will learn about some of the most powerful and influential women in ancient Egyptian history: Hatshepsut, Sobekneferu, Tiye, Nefertiti, and Merneith. We will learn about the achievements and contributions of these Egyptian queens while examining their funerary monuments and how they were depicted in paintings, sculptures, and reliefs. This class is taught with large images in a slide show for learners to examine details of the architecture and artifacts related to Egyptian women and queens while I share stories of their lives. I will ask students to make observations and point out relevant symbols and artistic choices. We will end the class with an interactive quiz to test learners' recall and understanding from class. Some basic knowledge of Egyptian history and/or geography may be helpful but is not necessary.
