Experiencia de clase

We will experience the entire design process, beginning with a concept for a garment, then working out the logistics of a design, choosing fabric, drafting a pattern, cutting fabric, assembling the garment, and finishing. Through interactive practical experience, we will learn sewing skills, navigate tricky circumstances, and stretch our creative problem-solving muscles.
Classes will be tailored to individual designs as we face whatever specific challenges come up. I will demonstrate each step of the process as we work through it together and encourage student involvement and questions as they arise.
No previous knowledge or experience is required. We learn by doing.

Metas de aprendizaje

Students will design and create a garment over the course of the week. The process they learn can be applied to any and all future projects in fashion design.

Lista de útiles escolares
- An open mind, lots of patience, and a good measure of creativity!
- Something to draw with/on (a pencil stub and notebook paper work just as well as colored pencils or fancy watercolors)
- Pattern paper, or some sort of big paper (Newspaper, poster board works great, it's $0.50 at Dollar Tree, even a bunch of computer paper taped together is fine)
- Scrap fabric, probably not more than 2 yards (Usually muslin, but anything works. Sheets from the thrift store are fantastic for this, usually around $3)
- Fabric (I usually browse the thrift store curtains first ($3-$7 for more than you need) but we'll talk about fabric stores and how to get what we need for each specific design, and the benefits of designing around a fabric you got for $2 at the thrift store. Fabric at JoAnn's can range from $7-$30 a yard depending on what type, but I encourage upcycling.)
- Thread (matching your fabric, $2-$4)
- Tailor's chalk or colored pencil
- Pins
- Hand sewing needles
- Measuring tape
- Straight-edge ruler/yardstick
- Fabric Scissors (or very sharp normal scissors)
- Functional Sewing Machine (unless you want to do this by hand, but I promise it will be a lot harder and take A LOT longer)
- Closures (buttons, zippers, etc. Depends on the design. Zippers range $3-$5, buttons and snaps can be $2-$5)

OPTIONAL
- Any patches/trims/embellishments (we can look at this on a case-by-case basis and figure out how to get the best price.)
- Rotary cutter/cutting mats (not necessary, but will make your life easier)

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I've been making my own clothes since high school and always felt such a sense of accomplishment when I wore something I made. Since then, I've designed wardrobe for seven short films and two promotional photoshoots. I've learned by trial and error and I would love to share my hard-earned wisdom.
