A follow-up to Intro to Ancient Military History, this class dives deep into the dominant states of classical Greece: Sparta and Athens. During five weeks of lecture and discussion, students will learn about two very different approaches to social order. Sparta built a military state to craft the perfect "citizen-soldier", while Athens sailed into a golden age of art, philosophy and democracy. As these two powers rose, conflict was inevitable. We'll follow the lives of kings and generals, study battle simulations, and explore the context behind why they went to war. Participation and group discussion are strongly encouraged, but if you prefer, sit back and listen to an engrossing story.

Our syllabus:
Week 1: Spartan Society and rise to power
Week 2: Unifying Greece against Persia and the road to Thermopylae
Week 3: Athenian Society and naval power, the Battles of Salamis and Plataea
Week 4: The Peloponnesian Wars and the evolution of strategy and tactics
Week 5: Conclusion of the Peloponnesian Wars, and mutual decline

Metas de aprendizaje

Students will learn how Spartan and Athenian societies were structured. We'll look at the long trajectory of their rise and fall. And we'll examine key battles of the wars that defined and ruined the first great military state and the first democracy in the western world.

Orientación para padres
While this is a history class, it is a history of warfare -- and a primitive kind at that. We will maintain an academic perspective, but we will discuss how and why people kill one another. We'll keep it PG.

Hello! Language nerd, history buff, culture geek -- whatever you call it, that's me! I'm obsessed with how people connect and what brings us together. I examine history, literature, language, travel, food and everything human, looking for the personal stories hidden between the lines and the social narratives lurking in the broader context. I love it, and I can't wait to share it with you.

I am a former public relations professional with a masters in PR and bachelor's degrees in Spanish and theatre. In Washington, DC I honed my writing craft while working in think tanks to lead congressional relations teams, polling research programs and bilingual outreach initiatives. I did a little speech writing too. While earning BAs in Spanish, Portuguese and Theatre at the University of Texas, I pursued myriad interdisciplinary interests, minoring in French, Astronomy and History. Currently I have a niche interest and expertise in Classical Antiquity, particularly the geopolitical and military history of Mesopotamia, Greece and Rome. This has guided my current course of study and inspired the majority of classes I teach on Outschool.
