Experiencia de clase

In this class social skills will be taught. The type of social skills will be in regards to the Deaf community. Your student will be eating and/or drinking while interacting with the teacher and other students. While food and drink are not necessary, it is preferred simply for the community aspect.

Weeks 1-End of class
Fingerspelling
Numbers
Foods
Drinks
Animals
Family signs
Friend signs (Friend, best friend)
Plants
Transportation

Every other week the teacher will have a Deaf culture moment where she will briefly discuss different aspects of Deaf culture. Examples being: How to get the Deaf individuals attention, how sign names are given and who gives them, etc.

Week three or four we will turn our voices off and continue the class in American Sign Language. Occasionally breakout rooms will be used so the students can learn how to communicate without the teacher's aid.

Each class the teacher will have a suggested topic to start with, but the students are not limited to just that subject. The topics will be kept age appropriate.

This class requires a webcam because we are discussing in ASL.

My teaching style is very relaxed and my communication style is the same. I expect these classes to have a relaxed format as they are more discussion based.

I do prefer the student having at least fingerspelling before joining this class. The reason is I want to make sure all the students can keep up, fingerspelling does help that. I would like this class to be strictly voice off, but if a student needs to use their voice they may. The reason is I'd like the student to have a solid immersion experience.
Metas de aprendizaje
The students will learn how to interact with a Deaf, Hard of Hearing, or hearing person in a cafe type setting. Most Deaf events are in this kind of setting and it is good preparation for a real meeting with a Deaf person.

The teacher has a 3 strike policy. If your child misbehaves more than three times, they will be booted from the class. This is for the safety and wellbeing of all the students.

Hello! My name is Samantha Cox. I am planning to teach life skills courses, basic American Sign Language, ASL grammar, and more classes. I am starting with life skills and ASL. I have an associate degree in ASL and a BS in Interpreting. My associates degree is from Onondaga Community College and my B.S degree is from The Rochester Institute of Technology (Most of my schooling was done on the Deaf side of campus, NTID).

I have taught history, ASL, and science to my siblings who are between the ages of 3-14 and my older sister who is in her mid twenties. I did a service learning project where I taught a group of people basic ASL who ranged in ages from 8-50. I have done volunteer interpreting in religious settings and summer camps.

I also taught Sunday School at my church for around three years along with VBS.

I ran my own business on Etsy for several years which focused on sewing and knitting. I hope to eventually add sewing classes to my schedule.

Learning should always be a fun experience for everyone, including the teacher. We should all learn from each other. I am a laid back teacher, I prefer to go by what my students are remembering. I always start with the alphabet and numbers with my older students. With the alphabet in ASL, you can go far.

I was homeschooled my entire life and applied to 5+ colleges. I was accepted into all of them.
(Some of which include: Gallaudet University, Idaho State, Liberty University, Goshen College, etc.)

I got married June 5th 2020, so my name changed to Cox from Speed. I am also a mom of one girl and have a second child on the way.

Edit (9/24/2020): I have ongoing health issues that sometimes prevent me from teaching. Because of this I have running discounts that go up to 80% off of a single class. If I am able and don't have a schedule conflict, I add classes to the end so we can get the same amount of work done.
