In this class, students will learn about the life and writing of Oscar Wilde. Oscar Wilde was a nineteenth-century poet, playwright, and author of short stories, fairy tales, and one novel - The Picture of Dorian Gray. Students in this segment of Amazing Authors will explore Oscar Wilde's life, philosophy, and writing. Oscar Wilde's talent for conversation made him a star in both England and America. His love of beauty as portrayed in his aesthetic philosophy is apparent in his writing. For this class, learners will analyze Wilde's philosophy through a discussion of The Picture of Dorian Gray. We will talk about Oscar's marriage to Constance Wilde and his two sons, as well as his literary career as author, playwright, and editor of The Woman's World Magazine. We will talk about his meeting Lord Alfred Douglas, and how Douglas' dispute with his father led to Wilde's tragedies. We will discuss the tragic end of Oscar Wilde - his trial and imprisonment for what was then considered gross indecency, his time in France after his imprisonment, and his early death from cerebral meningitis. We will end by discussing Oscar Wilde's legacy as a genius of literature. I will teach this class via a PowerPoint presentation that includes the history of Oscar Wilde, through references to The Picture of Dorian Gray, and through class discussion. I believe students learn best when they take ownership of their studies via discussion and when they enjoy what they are learning. This will be an interactive class in that students will discuss with me and with one another this amazing author. Students are encouraged to read or listen to The Picture of Dorian Gray prior to class in order to get the most out of our time together in class. This book is in the public domain and can easily be found online.
