In this ongoing, weekly class, students will choose which animal detective story they would like to learn about each week! Each session topic will be learner-directed. I will research the stories in advance, present options to the learners, and share about whichever story the learners want to hear. Examples of stories we may cover include a money-sniffing dog, a horse that could predict the future, and a cat whose DNA solved a crime. Learners are welcome to draw the story as we discuss. Learners can ask questions throughout the story, share observations, and tell stories about interesting animals they know. Some of these stories involve crimes like murder and missing persons, which, for this age group, we will discuss in class as someone who is missing or lost. No supplies or materials will be necessary for this class. The learners can just sit back, relax, and listen and share their thoughts. However, learners are also welcome to draw the story as we discuss. Student participation is encouraged but not required. In order to facilitate learning and maintain a classroom free of distraction, no filters will be permitted, no backgrounds may be used (except for blur), and no emojis may be used other than a raised hand. After learner verification, video can be on or off. Chat will be closed except for student/teacher messaging. Any questions from learners regarding the subject matter can be asked orally, or can be asked in the chat, but I will answer questions orally for the benefit of the entire class.

I'm an attorney and author, passionate about teaching young people the ins-and-outs of law, civics, government, and critical thinking. I have been a licensed attorney for 14 years, and I worked in a public service setting for most of my legal career. In 2022, I wrote, edited, published, and publicized my first book, about US public disability benefits. This opportunity to educate people about how the US government works has helped solidify my desire to also educate young people about US history, the structure of government, the way institutions work, how laws are passed and implemented, and ultimately how this impacts the way in which we treat each other as fellow citizens.
My teaching style involves participation, interaction, theoretical questions, and hypothetical scenarios to help students understand why people throughout history have made certain decisions, and to think critically about why things happen the way they do.
I have a BS in Economics and Political Science from Florida State University and a MS in Comparative Politics from the London School of Economics and Political Science. I also have a law degree from Florida State University, and I am licensed to practice law in Florida and Washington.
