Game theory is a field of mathematics and economics that tries to predict the choices that perfectly rational decision-makers (players) make in given situations. It can be used as a lens to understand international relations if the players are countries. In this class, I'll spend the first half of class going over the basics of game theory and explain the mathematical models for some basic two-player games. In the second half, the entire class will discuss historical examples of these games in international relations how we can apply these theories to explain interactions between countries. At the end, I'll provide some resources that students can use to explore the subject further if interested.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will learn the basic vocabulary and theory of game theory, as well as the high-level details of four classic games: prisoner's dilemma, stag hunt, chicken, and battle of the sexes. Students will apply the framework of game theory to historical and current events in international relations, such as the Cold War and current climate change policy. Finally, students will be provided with a list of resources to explore the topic further if interested.

Orientación para padres
Because we are discussing international relations, students may raise some politically sensitive topics during the class discussion. However, the aim of the class is on using game theory as a framework to empathetically understand the motivations of all players, so we will focus on known facts.
Recursos externos
Los estudiantes no necesitarán utilizar ninguna aplicación o sitio web más allá de las herramientas estándar de Outschool.
Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
Most of my classes are deep dives into interesting concepts that have changed the way I think and given me skills that I use constantly in my day job. As a mechanical engineering graduate, I enjoy teaching creative yet structured problem-solving through Fermi questions, dimensional analysis, and breaking down Chinese characters. As a management minor, I enjoy helping teens develop their empathy and communication skills through learning about game theory, comparative mythology, and negotiation.
In my classes, I cover some material with a class discussion and provide resources for students to explore further if they are interested. It makes my day whenever a student wants to continue the conversation through Outschool messages after class!
If cost prevents you from taking any of my classes, please send me a message. And please feel free to reach out if you have any other questions or requests!
