Have you always dreamed about living on a farm? Having chickens, goats, or cows? Waking up at 4am to an obnoxious rooster crowing? Or maybe a Turkey gobbling at your back door at 5am, impatiently waiting for his breakfast? Or maybe you live in the city but love fresh farm eggs for YOUR breakfast? If you're ready to jump into farm life with your own back yard chickens, you've come to the right place. This course will cover the basics from hatching to laying as we follow the life of a baby chick from just days old, to eight weeks of age.

Each week a written lecture will be provided and a video showing the chicks growth progress (for oooohing and aaaaaahing) will be posted. Students will participate in weekly discussion questions (with at least 3 responses), compile a list of questions they have for me about the chickens, and partake in a Kahoot quiz. Occasional worksheets/handouts will be provided as well as various links for further learning.

Week 1 - Incubators: Pros and cons of using an incubator or letting a broody hen hatch her own chicks.
Week 2 - Egg Development: Learn to candle eggs and why it is important when using an incubator.
Week 3 - Hatching: Watch some hatching videos or check out pictures of just hatched chicks, as well as discuss why it is important that the chick hatches on its own, without help. (See parental Guidance Note)
Week 4 - General Chick Care: Feeding and caring for just hatched chicks.
Week 5 - Chicken Breeds: Learn about different breeds of chicks and their benefits.
Week 6 - Chicken Coop Design: Learn the basic housing needs of a chicken and design your own coop!
Week 7 - Chicken Care: Treating issues that may arise over the course of owning chickens.
Week 8 - Egg Laying: The process of laying an egg and a brief chicken anatomy lesson.

This course must meet minimum enrollment to meet the high level of interaction required by Outschool! Please share with your friends!

Hello! My name is Kristin. I was a licensed Teacher in Oregon prior to having children (ages 8-12) and focusing on their education. I earned a Masters of Arts in Teaching degree from Western Oregon University in Middle and Secondary Education for Science and Health.

Most my classes focus in health and science, particularly the Middle School level, as I’ve found I enjoy that age group the best. I do have many interests and hobbies, so some classes venture outside the core academic realm and into hobby land. We live in southern Colorado on a small ranch where we enjoy animals, gardening, and self sufficiency in a very challenging climate.

My goal is to instill a desire to learn with lessons that are meaningful and enjoyable. I remember sitting in a desk in front of a whiteboard, bored out of my mind, thinking, “There is no way I will EVER need to know this!” Yet, when I became an adult, I quickly realized, that yes, I did need to know most of the information I was taught. I have needed to go back and relearn much of what I previously ignored as useless information. When you can apply information to your life it becomes meaningful. I like lessons to focus on application: how can I use this knowledge in MY life; why do I need to know this? I am so excited to meet your child and help them apply the knowledge they're acquiring to their life!
