Puzzles can be used to teach a variety of topics in an engaging and entertaining way. In engineering, Toy Problems - idealized puzzles - are often used to introduce real world problems in probability, statistics, and optimization. In this critical thinking workshop students will be introduced to classic brainteasers like the Towers of Hanoi and the Seven Bridges of Konigsberg. We will also look at probability problems, lateral thinking puzzles, paradoxes and logical fallacies. Whenever possible I put these puzzles into historical perspective so students will become familiar with the fascinating people who have contributed to this field. Each week I will select several puzzles. Some will be mathematical but the majority will be verbal puzzles that require students to use logic, deductive and inductive reasoning. Problem solving is a human endeavor and the skills used by the puzzle solver are the same ones used by the master carpenter, the police detective, and the quilter. This is an interactive class in which students are encouraged to contribute to the conversation and to share their solution process.
Metas de aprendizaje
The goal of these sessions will be to teach students that there are tried and true techniques that can be used to approach most puzzles or problems. Some of those techniques include the Rule of Thumb, the educated guess, the estimate, grid creation, puzzle diagramming, and sketching.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I teach math puzzles, logic teasers, and games. I have always been fascinated by puzzles - crosswords, secret codes, mazes, and more. I was a college chemistry major, I completed my doctorate in chemical engineering, and for a number of years I worked in engineering research and development. Problem solving was something I did for work and fun.
My passion for puzzles as a teaching resource started when I was homeschooling my sons. I was motivated by the connection between certain types of puzzles and math word problems but I soon realized that my sons were learning more than just math. They were developing critical thinking skills like pattern recognition, deduction, and lateral thinking - and they were having fun doing it!
I have a hands-on approach to learning because the best way to understand is to do. I always try to give some historical context behind what we study because knowledge is passed on by those who have gone before us.
In my spare time, I take long walks with my dog in our lovely Pittsburgh parks, I experiment with new recipes, I enjoy woodworking, and I try to keep up with the weeds in my garden.
