This class will delve into black hair history covering different time periods and their significance to people of the African diaspora. Key themes related to black hair will be explored. Some of the concepts may already be grasped by some learners, but the class will provide an overview in a sociocultural context allowing learners to reflect on the overall experience of those with Afro hair throughout different historical and political eras. This class is non-gender specific and boys as well as girls are encouraged to attend. There will be seven weeks total of lessons, each week addressing a new theme and providing an opportunity for deeper reflection on the topic as we progress, with one week for review and informal assessment. Although this class is about hair, it is a social studies class, meant to help learners understand the political nature, the social and economic responses to these changes, as well as the cultural contexts, that the experience of having Afro hair has generated over time. Learners will still have a chance to think about the aesthetics and fun side of African hairstyles. Week 1: Pre-colonial times Week 2: Post-enslavement influences Week 3: Business ventures Week 4: A brief chronology Week 5: The modern era Week 6: Social and Political considerations Week 7: Tradition in modern times Week 8: Assessment and review No previous knowledge is required!! A final quiz will also be a part of the class, to test for information retention. PLEASE NOTE: If you will require a grade or report for this class, please advise BEFORE the start of the class so that I can generate appropriate assessment throughout the course. I am located in the Pacific Time Zone (PST/PDT).
