Come learn about Phillis Wheatley Peters - the first African American woman poet to publish a book of poems and to gain national and international attention! In this class, we will learn about her early life through a short visual presentation and read two of her poems, "An Hymn to the Morning and "An Hymn to the Evening" As a class, we will review Wheatley's use of rhyme scheme and literary devices in her poems and discuss her use of the pastoral mode. During this class, learners will use guided questions to develop their own six-line poem and have an opportunity at the end of class to share what they have written. This is a great class for budding poets and those interested in learning more about varying styles of poetry and the poets famous for using them!
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will learn about the first African American woman poet to publish a book of poems. Students will review poetic devices like "stanza," "rhyme scheme," and review literary devices to include "imagery" and "personification." Learners in this class will be introduced to the pastoral poetic style and be guided in creating their own pastoral poem. In creating their own pastoral poem, student swill use imagery and personification. The end goal is for all learners to have written a poem inspired by Wheatley.
