Something to write on, something to write with
Students should be comfortable dealing with themes such as murder, bullying, love, and fear. We select material that avoids profanity and though age-appropriate a bullying piece might include the word "stupid." We honor the writer's words. This is important when using material from real plays and films as we are not legally allowed to change their words. Students should be mature enough to understand the difference between real and imaginary. We do not use guns as props in class. A piece on "murder" may mention a gun. Participants must be mature enough to understand that referencing a murder or referencing a gun is a part of the character's imaginary world. Students will be asked to practice their assigned pieces (monologues or scenes) outside of class. Memorization or being “off book” is encouraged.
