This is a high-energy, highly interactive class that caters to the levels of all students. No experience in performing, theater, comedy, or improv required! More than anything, this is a space for everyone to be silly, connect with peers, and have fun. This class is flexible to the various interests, abilities, and ranges of motion of our students. * *We are currently improvising, writing, and performing our own stories! We will begin each class by connecting as a group, playing warm-up games to get our energy up, and we'll use our bodies as we're able to move around. Next, we'll work on creating "group mind," where we react and respond to one another, to practice awareness of our new teammates! Throughout the class, I'll be playing together with the students to model certain principles and practices, and giving them opportunities to perform as much as they feel comfortable. After warming up, we will dive into our focus for the class, which rotates each week, between different theater topics. These topics are subject to change depending on learner interest. This is where we get to do a lot of playing and experimenting. We also build in time to reflect on how a scene went, and what we could try the next time. We also utilize cooperation and partnerships between learners to do scene work together. The goal of this class is that students feel more comfortable and confident in their silliness, being in the 'spotlight', and can harness it into these fundamental performing principles. Each student will get personalized, supportive encouragement throughout class! Week One: Creating Characters: Physicality, Personality, and Presentation Week Two: Finding What's Funny: Humor and Improv Comedy Week Three: Love on Stage: How to Show Love (or Hate) of an Object Week Four: Clowning, Pantomime, and Movement Week Five: Script Reading and Analysis: the Monologue Feel free to reach out if your learner has specific needs that you would like me to know about before class, or if there are topics of interest you would like incorporated in a future class!

Hi! I'm Soleil (so-LAY) and I teach a variety of classes here at Outschool, from engineering and coding, to improv and performing basics. I have so many different passions, and love showing kids that they can explore multiple interests, too.
I have been a teacher in various formal and informal roles for several years now, and hold a Master's degree in Learning, Developmental, and Family Sciences with an Early Childhood emphasis. I'm a state certified teacher for birth-6th grade, but I love working with people of all ages!
My classes are student-led and inquiry-driven, and no two are the same for that very reason. I believe in following children, and see myself as a collaborator who scaffolds thinking, not as a directive leader. Any time I can give my students a voice and a chance to lead, I do! I follow Reggio-inspired principles and believe in connecting first and foremost with my students, as well as giving them the opportunity to connect with each other.
I love inspiring new ideas and ways of thinking, and feel so much joy in seeing children grow as makers, thinkers, performers, and creators. I can't wait to see you in class!
