This class uses a variety of texts to explore reading comprehension, grammar, and vocabulary. While the content is primarily academic and designed to boost ACT scores, some reading passages may contain complex themes. All content is chosen for its educational value and appropriateness for the target age group. Parents are encouraged to engage in discussions at home to further support their child's learning and appreciation of language.
This course will use a range of different passages and text to practice ACT skills. Most passages will be drawn from released ACT exams. (located here: https://www.act.org/content/act/en/products-and-services/the-act/test-preparation/english-practice-test-questions.html?page=0&chapter=0 And here: https://www.act.org/content/act/en/products-and-services/the-act/test-preparation/reading-practice-test-questions.html?page=0&chapter=0 ) We may also discuss passages used in sample questions published by educational resources like Khan Academy. If students need additional support with the words in context section, the homework will likely include reading long passages from 18th and 19th century literature. The typical passages that are assigned are drawn from “On the Origin of Species” by Charles Darwin, “David Copperfield” by Charles Dickens, “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes” by Arthur Conan Doyle, and “Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen.
