This one time class on Abraham Lincoln in Central Illinois offers a captivating journey into the formative years of one of America's greatest leaders. We will start with an examination of what types of sources we have, both primary and secondary, and what these many different sources tell us. Some of the primary sources are told through his own correspondence. This immersive educational experience delves into Lincoln's life and explores the profound impact of his time spent in central Illinois. Young students will gain a deep understanding of Lincoln's early experiences, from his humble beginnings in rural Kentucky to his influential years in New Salem and Springfield, Illinois. The class will examine Lincoln's legal career, his involvement in politics, and his evolving stance on crucial issues such as slavery. Moreover, the course will look at the significance of central Illinois as a backdrop for Lincoln's growth as a lawyer, statesman, and advocate for social justice. Participants will explore historical landmarks, such as Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site, Postville Courthouse, and the Lincoln Home National Historic Site, while examining their role in shaping Lincoln's character and political ideologies.
