"Meg’s father had been experimenting with this fifth dimension of time travel when he mysteriously disappeared. Now the time has come for Meg, her friend Calvin, and Charles Wallace to rescue him. But can they outwit the forces of evil they will encounter on their heart-stopping journey through space?" (www.madeleinelengle.com). Students will finish this book with a profoud appreciation of family, and recognize that loved ones are worth the determination it takes to keep them close. We will meet twice weekly, and read together about 20-25 pages or 1-2 chapters each time. We will discuss the characters, the plot, the themes, and the author's craft along the way. We will gain a few vocabulary words in each reading, and may complete some authentic vocabulary usage activities as we go. Here is a tentative schedule. (Please note, dates/times may be adjusted if all participants can agree to a schedule, I will try to be flexible.)
Week 1 Chapters 1-2 Relating to the characters; What is a tesserect?
Week 2 Chapters 3-4 Siblings; compulsion/restraint/obligation; a bit of Latin
Week 3 Chapters 5-6 A bit of French; a happy medium
Week 4 Chapters 7-8 Doors; columns; good versus evil
Week 5 Chapters 9-10 What is IT? Beasts and other creatures
Week 6 Chapters 11-12 Peculiar; fallibility; inverted; facing your fears
Week 7 End of book discussion, talk about author's other works, closure, next read aloud book?

Orientación para padres
This is a fantasy story of good versus evil. It has won many awards and has been a staple throughout many young people's reading list. Despite that, it has faced several challengers, due to the fact that there is a Bible reference in the book, and the story indicates the figures of Jesus, angels, philosophers, and other good people of the world as defenders of Earth against evil. We are not evaluating this text for religious purposes, however; instead, our goal is to enjoy the adventure of Meg, her brother and her friend, Calvin, to gain understanding for why they act the way they do, how the events in the story affect them, and to gather new vocabulary and knowledge along the way. (You are welcome to ask me any questions about the course if this is a concern.)

Hello! My name is Teacher Kathy, and I look forward to seeing you in my classroom! I teach students of all ages to become better readers and writers through integrated, interactive, and hands-on learning. I enjoy incorporating art and music into learning, and aim to reach all styles of learners: audio, visual, and kinesthetic.
My goal for each class is for students to walk away with useful, real skills in reading, writing, and vocabulary that will benefit them in whatever their own personal goals may be. Communication skills are essential in whatever successful pursuits a person may have, and my aim is to provide personalized, friendly, and fun help in becoming a better communicator: on paper, in person, online, conversationally, and (eventually) professionally.
I have been a middle school language arts and social studies teacher (15 years), and I taught life skills (3 years), introductory Spanish (2 years) and elementary art (1 year). I have been a high school English teacher in Literature, Grammar, and Practical English. I have also taught English as a Second Language online for the past 4 years. I have my Masters in Education and Curriculum from UMC.
When I'm not teaching, I enjoy reading, writing, cooking, sewing, crafts, camping and all things cats. As a writer, I have always kept journals, notes, lists, and written down my dreams in the middle of the night, in hopes of one day publishing a book (which has finally come to be a reality in 2021!) I like to spend time with my husband and six “kid-ties,” and enjoy traveling and learning about new parts of the world.
