Ever wonder what happened to all those extra scraps of fabric when a mother or grandmother were finished making dresses and quilts? Well, unlike today when we cut up a piece of paper and then throw out all of our scraps, families would collect those scraps and turn them into something useful and/or beautiful. What could you make with fabric scraps you ask? Maybe a rug, a few bows for a girl's braids, or maybe a rag doll to carry about and play with. For many girls, walking into a store to buy a new doll simply wasn't an option. In this class we will be traveling back in time to the 1860's when life on the American prairie was a whole lot different than we know it today. We will be discussing the differences in our lives present day verses pioneer life all while making a rag doll in pioneer fashion!

Metas de aprendizaje

By the end of the class students should be able to know how to make their own rag dolls and tell family and/or friends a few differences between their life and pioneer life.

Hi there!

I'm so glad you are here! My name is Miss Rosie. I have four children of whom have homeschooled, and attended both public and charter schools. We live in a small town in beautiful Northern California where we live with our hands. What do I mean by that?

Well...
With four kids we cook a lot of food. We like to eat organically so we decided we should grow and make as many things as we could ourselves. Let me explain more...

My family and I enjoy growing, harvesting and preserving our own food. It's a great skill to have and it's a great way to save money. Most summers you can find me in the garden counting down the days for the cucumbers to be ripe for the picking. There is something so rewarding about being able to harvest the food you have started from a seed and then turn those cucumbers into dill pickles! Ripe apples harvested from a friend's tree can be made into cinnamon applesauce; strawberries from the farmers market or fruit stand can quickly be transformed into sweet summer jam; peaches from a local orchard can easily be dehydrated into fruit leather that is great to take on the go. Nuts gleaned from a family members trees make an amazing gift, once they are cracked opened and candied. Sadly, this year we were not able to grow a summer garden, due to the timing of our move, so we are frequenting the farmers markets and local fruit stands bi-weekly for a alternative to our own backyard.

In addition to gardening we love having chickens! Hatching cute baby chicks, raising sweet hens, and collecting beautifully colored eggs are the best but we also occasionally butcher and eat them as well. We are looking forward to spring time when we plan to hatch out a new flock!

Over the past 6 years I have spent between 1-3 hours per week volunteering my time with children in my community, teaching them necessary life skills such as how to ask for forgiveness, how to forgive, acceptance of others while loving them through their differences, the importance of being truthful and how to serve others.

For two years I have worked for a sweet preschool, teaching those same life skills to 3 and 4 year old's. Other skills taught include, proper hand washing, how to communicate one's feelings, how to be a good listener, as well as beginning reading and writing.

I have a passion for teaching children things I wish I knew when I was young!
How to cook, how to raise chickens, and how to enjoy learning and how rich other cultures can be!

I am so excited to see your kids in one of my classes!
