In this ongoing class, the students will brainstorm to create solutions to problems presented in classic fairy tales.

Each week, the teacher will share a classic fairy tale with the students. After being presented with the story, the students will then be led into a discussion about the story using higher thinking level questions. This will help students to develop better critical thinking skills. The teacher will then present the students with a problem that arose during the story. For example: Why did two of the three little pigs have problems as a result of the way they constructed their home? What are some of the ways that the pigs could have prevented this from happening? Following the questions, the students will be given a planning page to begin to brainstorm how they would solve this problem. Students will begin to work out their solution in class - discussing materials needed and an overview of their plan. In the days following the live class, each student will construct their solution based on their plan, and then share pics/video of the success or failure of their plan in the classroom. The teacher will interact with the students by responding to their posts. The following week, the process will begin again with another fairy tale.

Here are some of the stories that we will cover: The Three Little Pigs, The Gingerbread Man, Rapunzel, Jack and the Beanstalk, Hansel and Gretel, The Three Billy Goat's Gruff, and many more!

Week 1: (January 29) The Three Little Pigs
We will discuss the power of wind and how that power can be harnessed. We will create an object that can be moved by the power of wind.

Week 2: (February 5) The Gingerbread Man
We will discuss the concepts of sink and float. The teacher will perform a demonstration and will discuss buoyancy. Students will brainstorm a way for the gingerbread man to cross the river without getting wet.

Week 3: (February 12) Rapunzel
We will discuss simple machines: pulley, lever, ramp. We will brainstorm how one of these could be used to assist in Rapunzel's escape.

Week 4: (February 19) Jack and the Beanstalk
We will discuss how insulation can help things from breaking. We will create an egg chute to assist Jack in getting the golden eggs down from the giant's lair in the sky.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will improve their critical thinking skills and problem solving skills.

My name is Jennifer Dodge, but my students call me Mrs. Jen. I am a certified early childhood teacher with a B.S in Early Childhood Education and a minor in music from Samford University. I have spent 12 years in the classroom teaching preschool, kindergarten, and language arts to first through seventh graders. For the past eleven years, I have had the awesome privilege of homeschooling my own three children who are now ages 22, 20, and 16. Currently, I teach kindergarten in a private school .

I am excited to help students learn to read and LOVE to read through hands on activities so that they will become lifelong learners! You will find that many of my classes are geared toward developing reading skills, novel studies, and hands-on book clubs, and book clubs that center around historical fiction so that we can take a deep dive into the historical aspect of the novel. I also love to teach preschool and kindergarten aged children, so I will also be providing classes that involve practice with fine and large motor skills, music and movement, and beginning reading, math, and science skills so that my students will be ready for school.

As a former homeschool mom, I also look forward to being able to provide classes that support other homeschool moms. If there is an area where their child needs extra enrichment or assistance, or if there is a subject that a mom just simply hates to teach, I would LOVE to partner with her in the homeschooling of her children.

I believe that learning to read and write NEVER has to be boring! I teach my classes with great enthusiasm so that my students will see my love for the subject. I hope this joy will come through the Zoom call and our classroom activities so that they will be excited to read and write as well. Reading and writing is a skill that every person will need throughout their lifetime. It is my goal as a teacher to make the learning of these skill enjoyable and exciting.

I look forward to having the opportunity to teach your child!
