Experiencia de clase

In this 4-week class, students will learn how volcanoes form, their composition, and the different types of volcanoes and why they produce specific types of eruptions. Students will learn about rock formation and the characteristics of the rocks formed by volcanic activity. They will be introduced to the plate tectonics that drive volcanic formation and eruptions.

We will be doing some in-class labs in this course. It is important for students to have the correct materials. Some labs may require extra time outside of class to complete. Please make sure that your student is completing the assignments so that we can go over them in the next class meeting. There will be a Poster Presentation during the last class period. Students will work on and complete this project at home after class. The amount of time it takes a student will vary based on the details they add but they should expect to spend between 1 and 2 hours outside of class on it. Instructions for the Poster Project will be given at the third class meeting. Students should have their rock kits by the fifth class meeting.

Students will need the following supplies:
1. Igneous Rock Kit which can be found at https://www.rainbowresource.com/product/014277/Igneous-Rock-Science-Kit.html
2. Trifold Board for poster project
3. Graham Crackers (Not the teddy grahams kind-must be square)
4. Cake frosting or whipped cream
5. One large marshmallow
6. Cup of water
7. Markers
8. Dedicated folder for this class
9. Colored pencils

The course will follow the following outline:
Week of April 4: Introduction to Volcanoes/ Rock Composition
Week of April 11: Plate Tectonics/ Famous Volcanoes
Week of April 18: Igneous Rock Identification Lab/ Mapping Volcanoes
Week of April 25: Volcanoes as Natural Hazards/ Poster Presentation

Any handouts that are necessary for the course will be posted in the classroom by Sunday of the week prior to class meetings for printing.

This class will be supported in Nearpod. Parents and students do not need to create an account as I will screen share during the lessons. Parent supervision may be necessary during our lab on Plate Tectonics for younger learners.

I am looking forward to meeting your child in class!
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will be able to identify the types of volcanoes, explain how igneous rocks are formed, identify igneous rocks, understand how plate tectonics affects volcanic activity, be able to explain where volcanoes are located, and will build confidence by presenting a poster project on a volcano.

I am a geologist with real world field experience. I have conducted research at Topaz Mountain in Delta, Utah on a rhyolitic lava flow and presented my findings at multiple Geological Society of America conferences. I am also a homeschool mom who strives to present the best information to all students whether they are my own children or someone else's children. I believe the key to loving science is, first, understanding what is being presented and then being able to apply it in a fun and memorable way.
