Is your child needing some extra math support to be successful in 6th grade? Are there topics they need to practice, or that they never covered in 5th grade, that you want them to explore? Are you wanting to keep your child motivated and confident as they begin to take on harder topics in mathematics? If so, this class is for you and your rising 6th grader! Over the course of 12 classes, we will review some of the most commonly missed or challenging 5th grade math topics, especially those that lay the basis for middle school math success. Ms. AJ taught 5th grade math for many years, and knows well the common curriculum gaps and challenging topics rising 6th graders have. She also knows first-hand the toll these challenges can have on student confidence. This class reviews important math concepts, while also encouraging students to contextualize math problems into their every day lives. It shows them the value of mathematics in our world, and sets them up for success as they grow older. In this class, students cover: -Place value -Area and perimeter -Decimals (adding, subtracting, and multiplying) -Money and currency value -Volume -Division and multiplication -Measurements (feet, inches, millimeters, centimeters, yards, and squared measurements) -Data, graphing, and charts -Coordinate planes -Measuring and drawing various kinds of angles -Positive and negative integers -X and Y axis Each session begins with an 5 minute introduction to a different female mathematician and how she contributed to the STEM field. They include: - Maryam Mirzakhani - Dame Mary Lucy Cartwright - Katherine Johnson - Sofia Kovalevskaya - Sophie Germain - Marjorie Lee Browne - Rachel Riley - Malala Yousafzai - Mayim Bialik - Maria Gaetana Agnesi - Ada Byron - Florence Nightingale Each week, students are challenged to complete at least 4 rounds of XtraMath outside of class to freshen up their mental math in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. When students complete each level, we will celebrate their achievement! Students will also be given Khan Academy homework that correlates with the skills we are practicing - this homework is optional, but highly recommended. The problems and projects are centered on topics inspired by the students in Ms. AJ's class, and she has designed the work with representation and accessibility in mind.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will understand the different in place value for the hundreds, tens, ones, tenths, and hundredths place. They will see that each place value represents x10 or /10.
Students will be able to remember and use the area and perimeter formula to accurately identify the area and perimeter of quadrilaterals.
Students will be able to add, subtract, and multiply decimal numbers up to the hundredths place.
Students will be familiar with U.S. money and currency value, including pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and dollars. They will be able to connect the currency to the decimal value.
Students will be able to find the volume of a cube using the volume formula
Students will be able to use the algorithm to complete division and multiplication problems.
Students will be familiar with various forms of measurements (feet, inches, millimeters, centimeters, yards, and squared measurements) and what they represent
Students will be able to identify various kinds of graphs and charts, and use them to visualize data
Students will understand the basics of graphing on coordinate planes, including identify the X and Y axis
Students will be able to measuring and drawing various kinds of angles, including right angles, obtuse angles, and acute angles.
Students will be able to identify positive and negative integers on a number line and show how positive and negative integers are used in every day life.

House Design - Find the Perimeter and Area of Shapes
This lesson uses a floor plan design project to review perimeter, area, and basic multiplication skills. Students will work on individual projects to create their dream house design. They will calculate the area and perimeter of their decor in order to fit their dream design into the given square footage. This project will also allow us to review and contextualize various multiplication skills, measurements (mm, cm, in, ft, yds)
