Nivel Intermediate
Cover second semester 6th-grade math content in this high involvement and discussion based course.

In order to facilitate discussion students need to come to class with cameras and microphones on and have class in a quiet location.

All class content is aligned with U.S. national standards.
Each class will follow the following format: Warm Up, Exploration/Discussion of the topic, collaborative practice, and evaluation.

Students will receive notes and homework after each class. The notes will be completed for them so that they can focus on actively participating in class. It is highly recommended students complete the homework.

The class will cover the following units:

Unit 1: Equations and Expressions
-Write and solve equations involving variables
-Understand number properties and apply them to variables
-Use formulas to solve problems
-Apply rules of equivalency to distribute and factor an expression

Unit 2: Negative Numbers and the Coordinate Plane
-Work with all rational integers on the coordinate plane
-Applying Formulas for Area and Perimeter using coordinate points
-Understand absolute value and additive inverse and number properties as they relate to positive and negative integers
-add, subtract, multiply, and divide integers

Unit 3: Geometry
-Area of triangles and other irregular and regular polygons
-surface area and it's relationship to the area of a 2 diminstional shape

Unit 4: Data and Statistical Probability
-Dot Plots and Histograms
-Measures of Center and Variability

I am a non traditional teacher, no lectures here!
Instead my classes focus on being:
*Student Centered- they lead the pace
*Critical Thinking -complex tasks are given that may be a bit unusual but will cause students to think deeply
*Problem Solving- word problems to keep concepts in context
*Focus on discovering patterns- patterns is the basis of the study of algebra and higher levels of math thinking
*Students create their understanding versus being told what to think

I am constantly learning how to become a better math teacher! I have a Master's degree in Math Education but I don't believe that means I know everything. In fact I am constantly reading about the brain, and the best ways to teach math. I also am constantly evaluating my classes and content and making changes based on how learners interact with the material.

I have 13 years of experience in Education, and have taught math at all levels including adults.

In my down time, I love hanging with my husband, and two girls. We love to read books, play games and do math together (of course:)
