Nivel de inglés: desconocido
Grado de EE. UU. 1
Nivel Intermediate - Advanced
Objective:
This 1 week course offers students the experience to read a rigorous text and analyze it closely on a first grade level while applying a specific skill for each class. Students will explore vocabulary, story elements, reading strategies like: comprehension, asking/answering questions, comparing and contrast, making predictions, inferencing, reading fluency, and writing.

Class Structure:
I will begin class by introducing the learning target for each lesson. We will explore the meaning of these concepts and make connections to develop understanding. I will then display the text. I will read the title, author's name, and illustrator. We will discuss how the title adds meaning to the text. Students will learn the genre of this text. Before we read our text, I will introduce unfamiliar vocabulary that we will come across while we read. We will then read together aloud and listen closely to identify characters, vocabulary, and important events. We will use context clues from the sentences/illustrations to help us define/remember the meaning of vocabulary words as well as describe characters and their actions. Students will practice applying the learning target of “asking/answering questions, comprehension, compare/contrast” for example. All lessons are common core aligned. Students will also practice writing skills during each lesson as well by writing short answer responses to questions related to the content. Students will be exposed to a rich vocabulary and critical thinking skills setting the foundation for reading fluency, accuracy, and understanding.

Teaching style:
This class will consist of meaningful discussions, engaging activities such as videos, books, interactive mini lessons, and writing activities. I am enthusiastic and full of positive energy. I enjoy having fun learning with my students and like to keep an upbeat, welcoming environment.

Students will have access to the anchor text we will read prior to class. Students are encouraged to listen to a read aloud of the story prior to class. Class documents will also be provided for each student to print out for classwork as well as homework for extra practice.

No prior knowledge is needed for this course. This is a foundational course that will start at the beginning of a first grade level.

Course outline: We will read and focus on a specific text. We will analyze this text over 4 classes. Each time we look back at the text, we will dive deeper into sections of the text to help us better understand the meaning of the story and how the progress of characters and their feelings can change over time.
Day 1 (intorduction/first read)
Day 2 (Analyze the beginning of the text)
Day 3 (analyze the middle of the text) Day 4 (analyze the ending of the text.) We will practice different reading skills each class by closely reading certain parts of the text. Skills we will focus on are: asking and answering questions, identifying characters, setting, vocabulary, and developing comprehension through critical thinking.

Possible Anchor Texts: (we will only focus on one text per week)

-“The Empty Pot” by Demi
-“Mice and Beans” by Pam Munoz Ryan
-“The Polar Bear Son” by Lydia Dabcovich
-“Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel” by Virginia Lee Burton

Once enrolled, The welcome message will notify you as to which text has been selected for that particular week. **Please message me if you would like to know what text will be assigned for the week you are considering or if you have any questions.

I would like to say thank you for taking the time out to read a little bit about me and for considering me as a part of your child’s learning journey! My passion for teaching continues to strengthen as each year passes! I take pride in building relationships with my students. Having a positive and welcoming environment is something that helps facilitate learning which ensures student engagement and success! I strive for my classroom environment to be warm and welcoming. It is important to me that my students are able to make meaningful connections and build confidence. My ultimate goal is to provide the best learning experience for my students that gets them excited and passionate about learning.

I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. I am currently certified to teach grades Pre-K—5 and Special Education Grades K—12. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). I also hold a certification in School Counseling. I have taught (and still teach) in a public school setting going on 13 years. The first 4 years I taught 3rd grade, pre-k and kindergarten. Now, for the past 9 years and counting, I have been teaching Special Education in the Elementary setting. Teaching regular and special education has provided me with countless opportunities to work with a variety of students. I have the ability to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of students. I am also able to individualize lessons and provide direct, explicit instruction by providing modifications and accommodations when necessary.

I was introduced to online teaching when I began my experience of teaching English as a Second Language with VIPkid to students who were learning English. This experience had motivated me to branch out and continue teaching online. It had inspired me to expand my platform providing me with the opportunity of teaching classes online for 5 years. I love meeting new people and being able to help make a difference in a learner’s educational experience.

Thank you for reading, and I hope to work with your child in the future! I am looking forward to meeting many students and exploring new concepts with them.
