This 10 week class is part 1 of a 2 part science course. The course is designed to be a full curriculum for you to use on it's own. All lessons are guided by the NGSS (Next Generation Science Standard) and the TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) for 4th and 5th grade. In the first semester, we will cover these units: -Unit 1: Intro to Science (2 weeks) Students will be introduced to science and discovery. We will learn how to plan investigations using the scientific method as well as learn about scientific tools for measurement and how to use them. -Unit 2: Matter (3 weeks) Students will learn how to classify matter by it's physical properties. We will also explore mixtures and solutions, their similarities and differences, and how to separate them. -Unit 3: Force, Motion, and Energy (3 weeks) Students will learn that energy has many forms and can be observed in cycles, patterns, and systems. We will also briefly explore the basic laws of physics and how they apply to gravity, motion, and energy. -Unit 4: Weather and Water (2 weeks) Students will investigate the difference between weather and climate and discover how the sun interacts with water to create the water cycle. We will cover all steps of the water cycle. We will meet for 1 hour a week for engaging and interactive lessons for 10 weeks. Students will keep a journal to refer back to throughout the class and to develop good note-taking strategies. The class will include a variety of different learning strategies to meet the needs of all students. including note-taking, discussion, hands-on activities, games, and challenges. Due to the nature of online learning and our limited in-class time, students will be asked to complete some assignments at home to prepare or review for class. Students will also be expected to interact with the class page between meetings from time to time. The class is intended to be educational, academic, and fun, because that is the best way to learn, after all! *If you have any questions regarding this class, gifted learners, or special populations, please don't hesitate to message me! I am a certified teacher and have a lot of experience accommodating all types of learners! *This course is designed to be used before the second semester, which will include lessons on: Weathering and erosion Fossils and fossil fuels The solar system Structures and functions of living organisms Learned behaviors and inherited traits of living organisms

Objectives:
-The student will design an experiment including a testable question and hypothesis
-The student will recognize science measurement tools (thermometer, triple beam balance, pan balance, graduated cylinder, etc.) and know how to use them
-The student will classify matter by it's physical properties
-The student will identify which mixtures/solutions can be separated and describe how they can separated
-The student will identify the 5 forms of energy and recognize when they are being used
-The student will calculate net force by identifying balanced and unbalanced forces
-The student will describe the difference between weather and climate
-The student will explain the role of the sun in the water cycle
